Yup, I'm pretty sure it supports both. Screen spanning is listed on the tech specs page and I remember reading something about clamshell somewhere else.
 
That's pretty weird. I read somewhere that the reason Apple didn't recommend the iBook support clamshell was that the heat from the keyboard could ruin the display.

Now, on a MacBook and Pro which generates much more heat, they use the clamshell mode as a plus.
 
The not providing clamshell mode because of heat thing I don't think was ever given as a reason by Apple. It was just made up by people looking for an explanation and a lot bought it. Apple's Pro laptops have always supported clamshell mode, at least the entire G4 line has.

Yeah it was apples attempt at crippling the consumer model against the more pro model.

the screen spanning patch is proof of that with iBooks supporting dual display and clamshell.
