with 11.3 is added stereo HomePod support but was using airplay 1 so was buggy and had huge lag, with macOS 12 is it airplay 2 and has it been improved? I know they now have airplay from phone to Mac so have they improved system wide airplay 2 support?

No same AirPlay 1 stereo HomePod support. Still has the play/pause lag when using it through the system control. Only AirPlay 2 through Music, TV & Podcasts apps still...

Ugh, this is the part I was most hopeful for, Airplay 2 with multiple targets as a general output would be an absolutely killer feature by this point

Well if you're running HomePod 15 beta, it's all messed up anyways. I can't even use my HomePods right now. The minis keep disconnecting from the internet, If connected to Mac, the audio is on a 10 second delay to the video system wide. If using the TV app and AirPlay 2, then the audio plays for 5 seconds and stops.
The OG HomePods are the only thing working currently with HomePod 15 beta. Hopefully it will be corrected by beta 2. Thinking it's both a macOS beta 1 issue and HomePod beta issue.

Shocking we still don’t have airplay 2 as a main output
Yeah, and it doesnt really make any sense, it seriously limits the utility of airplay 2. What the hell is the point of multiple outputs if I can only use it for stuff in the music app and podcasts?

Exactly it bugs me, I want homepod output and MacBook speakers at same time, it’s shocking it’s still airplay 1
