I used to have my mac turn on every morning at 7 (Scheduled boot option in Energy Saver preferences), but it stopped doing so once I enabled disk encryption.

Is this meant to be the case? I can't find information about it elsewhere.

I haven't tested this theory, but it may require a newer Mac that supports authenticated reboots. You can check if your Mac does by entering this into Terminal: fdesetup supportsauthrestart

It'll reply with true if it does support it.

Are you saying that you power off the machine and ask it to schedule a power on at a certain time?

I wouldn't expect this to work with filevault as the disk needs to be decrypted before Mac OS boots otherwise there's little point in encrypting it.

The authenticated reboot stuff sounds like something that the OS could use to install and update itself on an encrypted drive without you having to re-authenticate after it installs.

Could be wrong though.

@sn00p

Yep, on thinking about this further you're correct. Authenticated restart will ONLY work for a reboot - not a power on. So, yes, if you enable filevault AND set a power on time, the computer will power on at that time, and then will power back off (after a minute or 2) because no password was entered to unlock File vault.

Honestly, @flipsticks, shutting down/rebooting daily is crazy overkill. Just put your computer to sleep when you're done with it instead of shutting down. A monthly reboot is typically plenty, weekly if you're REALLY concerned or have stability issues.

Makes sense! Shutting it down daily was mostly for peace of mind, but notifications would wake my screen at night and the light was a bit annoying. I also eventually got used to the startup noise as my morning alarm...

No worries then, I'm sure I can live without it. Thanks heaps for your help guys!
[doublepost=1481930621][/doublepost]Thinking about the notifications I got while it was sleeping at night, would that be because Power Nap was enabled while charging? I'm going to try turning it off.
