is the mail app meant to check for mail automatically in the background, or only when it is running? I have to check mine manually to get mail. My yahoo email account seems to get emails when mail not running but not gmail or .mac.
I am in uk on o2.

Yes Mail does run in the background and you can set what intervals you want to Mail to check your emails.

If you do have a Yahoo account then Mail receives emails from the Yahoo account via "Push". This means that Yahoo pushes the emails to the iPhone Mail account automatically and you don't have to check. This is how Blackberry's work.

But the "Push" feature only works for Yahoo accounts and not any others.

I have mail set to check every half hour, but this doesn't always happen. I never know of there is any mail unless I run the mail app and go to the in box of an account. It then checks and downloads mail. It definately doesn't check itself. The yahoo account does check but that must be because it is a push account. Any ideas why the .mac and gmail don't check automatically? I have had my phone replaced twice for other reasons and every phone has done this.
