does Mail do this?

Hey hey,

So I have been using Apple's default mail program and love it.

But I have a delima, I use online mail as well as Mail.app to read my emails. And while my online mail is nice, it doesn't do nearly as good a job as Mail.app to sort out the junk / spam. What I would like to do is be able to have Mail.app sync with my server so whatever I emails I have trashed in Mail are also gone off my web based email. That way all of my good and needed emails are online and can be accessed from anywhere. But my Junk mail gets deleted off the server as soon as I delete it in Mail.

Is there anyway to do this? or do I need to get a new mail client?

It might depend on the webmail client that you use.

I have a couple of IMAP webmail services that I use and it works exactly like you want. They download into Mail, Mail cleans em up, I delete them and the appropriate ones are gone when I check on the web from work later.

That's sweet... but my mail client uses POP ... does this mean I am out of luck?

As far as I know, Web-based POP email doesn't support server synchronization like IMAP does; however, web-based POP does support downloading. I'm afraid you're out of luck unless you can use an IMAP-based server.

Sorry to jump in but I've just taken a look at Mail today for the first time and the same question occurred to me.

I use Yahoo as my main email (I've got sbc dsl so I've got a 2 gig mailbox) and have for a long time. I'm not thrilled with it but it's very useful in terms of access from where ever I happen to be.

I'd prefer to use, and shouldn't have a problem with using, Mail most of the time. There will be moments, however, when I'll find myself at someone else's computer and need to access my email. Now, since Yahoo is POP I can't sync the two programs and for the most part that's fine. With 2 gigs I don't mind leaving email on the Yahoo server for awhile and then clean it out once a month or so. My biggest problem is this:

When sending and email from Mail, I don't get a copy of the email in the Sent folder of my Yahoo account. This will, at some point, be problamatic for me. Often I need to run through a history of an email exchange. The only way around this, I think, it to CC myself on everything I send out, filling up my Yahoo inbox and making the management of it even more time consuming. Is there any way around this--saving my sent emails in my Yahoo account and not resort to cc'ing myself on everything?

To answer my own question, or in other words, to learn to think before asking:

I solved my problem by setting up a filter on my Yahoo account to always store emails coming from my email address in a specific folder. This way they're separate from the mail in my inbox and Mail doesn't download them at all.

So now the only issue is occasional cleaning up of my Yahoo mailbox, which may not be too big of a deal.

None of this helps with MrSugar's original question however. I can't find anything that would lead me to believe Mail and a POP webmail account can sync. Which may be enough to send me back to using just the web mail, sadly, but I'll see how it goes.

I believe the same lack of server support that makes synchronization not work also causes sent mail not to be copied, so I'm afraid both of you are out of luck. As long as you send emails from Mail, and Yahoo uses a POP server, your sent mails will NOT go to the Yahoo server.

but I think it only works with (notso)Hotmail. Not sure if there's another similar product for Yahoo that downloads your mail into Mail.app from the web mail interface.

I believe the original poster is already using a plug-in like HTTPmail to download mail...and that still doesn't solve the synchronization problem.

Okay...I've got a question now. I have an IMAP email adress. I entered all the correct info in the boxes when I opened up Mail, and it said that it cannot contact the server. I triple checked everything. All the periods and spelling is correst, the network is working, but I still can't get it running. Any thing I may be doing wrong?

WEeeeeeee!!! So I talked to my hosting and we do have IMAP email synching. So, now how do I set this up in my email?? What do I need to do in Mail.app to have it synch with the server but keep the mail I want online?

All you need to do is find the address of your IMAP server (which your hosting will provide), add it to Mail.app's server list, then tell Mail.app to use that server.
