I see that iMessages forward from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro Messages app, but when my iPhone received a normal text message (green) that message does not appear on the Mac.

I do have forwarding to the Mac turned on in the Messages app settings on my iPhone.

Is it designed to work only with iMessage or should regular messages from non-iPhone user be shown in the Messages app on a Mac?

With Mac OS X 10.10.x Yosemite or higher in combination with iOS 8.x or higher the Mac Messages app will include SMS when "Text Message Forwarding" is enabled in iOS Settings>Messages.

dont forget to make sure you're signed in with your apple id in the messages app on your mac — go to Preferences in the messages app and make sure your phone number is checked too.
