If anything just the opposite, the iPad is making me reconsider a new iPhone. I have a 3G iPhone and I am eligible to upgrade when the new iPhone comes out, I also have a 3G iPad on order. If I like the iPad as much as I think I will, I may just keep my current iPhone until it dies, possible turn off the data plan, maybe down grade to a regular phone or maybe try something completely different. I really like my iPhone, but personally for anything other than taking calls, texting and listening to music it is too small of a screen for me.

I bought an iPad knowing that there would be a new iPhone in the summer (as there has been for the past 2 years running). So no, the new iPhone's existence does not make me reconsider my iPad purchase.

Not reconsider. Just worry about where I'm going to get the funds for it haha. Im eligible for a partial upgrade so the new iphone will probably cost me $399 or $499 depending on which one I get. However I might put my girlfriend on my ATT plan and use the upgrade for the new iphone and give her my 3GS.

When they announced the iPad I said I didnt need it, was bummed they didnt talk about 4.0 or anything iPhone related at the announcement. But was kind of excited to see what jailbreakers did with the ipad once they got their hands on it.

Fast forward to now. I've played with the ipad in the store a bunch of times and decided I really want it. So I reserved a 32gb model and im waiting for the email. I've also planned on getting the new iPhone so nothing really changes there I'm just going to have to figure out where the money is coming from. Luckily my g/f is getting me the ipad for my bday. (a little early cause I couldnt wait lol.) So I just need to start saving for the new phone.

If you bought a 3GS, save yourself the upgrade fee and get an iPad this year. Then next year your iPhone upgrade will only be $200-300 vs $400-500. Also when Apple upgrades things like the screen resolution, people don't think about it needing extra horsepower. I bet this iPhone will be as laggy as a first gen by OS 5.0. Wait until they get another speed bump on the new screen NEXT summer. 960x640 will probably be the standard for the next 3-4 years on new iPhones. This will also make for sharper looking apps in the iPad simulator, as they run at double width, double height 960x640. Then the next year you can get a 3rd generation iPad that will be all kinds of better, probably with a newer brand of processor, like an A5 or something, and plenty of RAM! Plus all the other expected goodies.

An Apple employee (I assume) left the next-gen iPhone in a bar?!?

Oh, someone is SO fired. :D

Yeah. Can you believe it??

I'm imagining by now that Apple Security is knocking on Gizmodo's office door, insisting on getting their toy back. Which is why Giz took their sweet time picking this thing apart before posting the story.

Lots of great perspective on the replies.

Just to clarify my OP, I'll restate:

If you have $600, and only that much, to spend on one new Apple toy this year, and you already own a 3GS, would it be an iPad or an iPhone HD, as detailed on Gizmodo today? (We'll just call it "iPhone HD" for sake of argument.)

One is all new and has the screen real-estate to let you do things that you couldn't do on any iPhone.

The other fits in your pocket and you can have it with you all the time. It will have screen resolution not far off from the iPad, but a much smaller physical dimension. You're still in contract, so you'd pay full retail. Yes, you can ebay the old one and make about half of it back, but that's not really my question.

For the record, I will likely get the iPad and stick with my 3GS. I still don't think double the res is all that beneficial from a "screen real-estate standpoint" when the iPhone screen is still small and my fingertip is still the same size. It will look nicer of course. But an iPad can take advantage of more pixels in ways the iPhone never could.

I had an iPhone but got rid of it last month. It was great, but I don't really want a smart phone I guess. Yet iPad seems perfect for me.

If anything I'll be getting rid of my iPhone and getting something that makes calls and texts only. The 3G iPad will handles most of the functions I use my iPhone for so I don't see the point in having both.

Nope. I am getting the 3G iPad, and when the new iPhone comes out, I will buy that one too.

By getting an iPad 3G, I'm actually eliminating my need for a smartphone. My Blackberry Storm (POS) contract will be up end of the year, and I don't plan to upgrade. I'm going to switch back to a regular flip-phone and not pay another $30 monthly data plan. I can check email and surf or whatever else I want from the iPad, and use the phone for just that -- a phone.

And since I already have a flip phone to use, I won't even need to do another contract.

Not at all. They aren't substitutes. iPad is too big for carrying around when I am out on the town. iPhone is not great for watching movies on the plane or surfing the net in bed.

I'm eligible for early upgrade and I'm sure I can get more than $300 on ebay for the 3GS so I will do a cashflow neutral upgrade of my iPhone in June.

I was planning on getting both but the iPad really has blown me away in terms of speed and usability. I might just upgrade to the 3GS if the new iphone doesn't increase screen size. I've always thought the iPhone screen was a tad small.

Nope. The 3GS is only a year old and will be getting the features I'm looking forward to with OS 4.0. And since I'm selling my wifi iPad to upgrade to a 3G version and my current 2 yr contract isn't up until next July, I won't get the discounted price for the new iPhone (a bit too much to spend). I am a fan of the new design (if it is in fact the real deal) and the prospects of possibly being able to swap sim cards (with a jailbreak/unlock) to share data plan is enticing, my non-gadget loving wife would probably not be to happy with me

Yeah, just sell your 3GS to get the new iPhone. Then you can have both. Believe me, once they announce the new iPhone, you're gonna want one!

You still have to sink a couple hundred dollars into the deal.

Last year I sold my 3G (and my wife's) for $300 ea on Ebay. We got early upgrades on the 3GS at $500 each for a 32 GB model. So it's still about $200 per phone to upgrade -- similar to getting a new one with contract but certainly not free.

Yeah I did the same thing last year, but was able to sell the 3G for $400 and getting the 32GB 3GS at $500. I think you'll fare pretty well with the 3GS this time around.

Well it makes me consider the options. The touch will likely follow most of the new phone specs so if I could get a Touch with those specs would I?
Probably not. The so called hirez screen is still less pixels than the iPad and still too small to read easily and the cameras are not a must have feature. Now if they come out with the rumored iPad mini then that would be a tougher call.

If you have a 3GS, keep it and get an iPad. iPhones only need to be updated every two years; the upgrade will be cheaper and you will appreciate the new features a lot more when you are getting two revisions' worth at once. The 3GS still rocks.

Just checked out the 4th Gen iPhone leaked in Gizmodo, and not missing anything. Cameras and flashes not a need for me. Will upgrade when I earn the points though. For now, iPad is my primary toy :D
