Hi guys,

Does anyone know if the nvidia 7300 GT provided with the mac pro, supports portrait mode ?

For now, I own an "old" G4 with an AGP radeon 7800 pro that supports two 20' (1200x1600) monitors, side by side and I really NEED that configuration on my future mac.

Or must I buy a radeon x1900 xt just to get that function ? I dont need graphic power, just (double) portrait mode, and i think 350 extra euros (about 350 $) is a too high price to get that function.

Thank's for you answers and advices,

Roland (Paris, France).

The 7300 in the Mac Pro supports dual-link DVI, so yes.

I think you mis understood what DDL is. It's not two DVI connectors, but one DVI connector being able to pull up to 3840x2400 pixels, while a normal DVI connector only will pull 1920x1200. On the 7300GT is one DVI and Duallink DVI plug. It will support both monitors, also in portrait mode.;)

Hi sorry to ask again but i don't understand;

is there any relation between dual-link DVI and "portrait" (vertical screen) mode ? (1200*1600, NOT 1600*1200 !)

and on the apple site i can read :
<< The GeForce 7300 GT comes with one dual-link DVI and one single-link DVI port, allowing you to connect one 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display to the dual-link DVI port and one 20-inch or 23-inch Cinema Display to the single-link DVI port.>>
That's pretty clear but doesnt speak about portrait mode at all :-(

On my mind only ATI cards got that opportunity using "ATI Display" utility...
I wish i'm wrong cause nvidia cards are cheaper and i'm not even sure "ati display" works on mac pro... :-(

So ?
Any other comment anyone ?
Thank's :)

I know it's not two connectors. ;)

Apple Official Answer

Sorry guys, the official answer of apple is NO.

None of the video cards provided with the new "mac pro" supports the "portrait mode".

Maybe a more precise answer would be "not yet" ?
BTW, I won't buy a "mac pro" untill I'm sure this feature is available...

Wait and see :-(

Mac Pro DOES support portrait mode - in Win XP !!!

Yes - the Mac Pro does support portrait mode with the 7300 GT!

I got my Pro today, with two 7300 GT cards inside (I work with three monitors in portrait mode). There is NO portrait support in OS X.

But Apple managed to develop latest Bootcamp version with drivers supporting portrait mode in Win XP. This is a somewhat strange situation.

Imagine: Apple sells hardware along with its own OS but you have to use another OS (Win XP) in order to adapt the configuration to your specific needs.

This is what I call a masterpiece of screwed up product design.
