Does push while abroad require data roaming? (UK 02)

I don't really want to use data roaming while abroad. I have data roaming set to off. I believe that is all I need to do to avoid extra charges, and that I don't need to switch push notifications off.

However, my question is whether push notifications will work whilst I'm abroad - but connected to WiFi. This would be very handy (possibly even make it worth buying a data roaming bolt on if this is in fact necessary). Does anyone know whether they will?

I'm not asking if I need to turn push off to avoid roaming charges - I realise this has been asked elsewhere But I couldn't find whether push relies on data roaming.

Yes, push costs; but if you have data roaming turned off push will be turned off also. If you are connected to WiFi, that connection will be disabled when you put your iPhone into standby, so it'll work more like 'fetch' in that new items will only be retrieved when the iPhone is connected to the WiFi.

Rough guideline from a regular roamer

I've roamed a lot with both Blackberry and Microsoft Exchange Push. Blackberry is far more efficient. For moderate emailing you're looking at approx' 4MB a month (approx' £30) with Microsoft Exchange Push. I find it so useful (i.e. ability to reply to emails while enjoying a beer in the bar when 12 time zones ahead of home), I just budget for it and pay up. If Push is a luxury rather than a necessity for for you, 2-3 regular fetches throughout the day will probably keep the data usage down.

If traveling to the US, don't forget that most hotels have free WiFi and many offices (if traveling to one on business) have guest WiFi so you could probably keep push switched on whenever in the hotel or office....

Edit: What about Me Push? Is this the same as Exchange Push in terms of data? I'll do some tests next time I hit the road/air/rails.....
