Does Starcraft hold up?

Starcraft is a blast. I think it's still one of the best lan party games because even the guy who shows up with an 8-year old laptop can play!
You don't need to learn how to rush. Just learn how to hold off rushes. Then you usually win. 
Lots of noobs in the lower leagues though... who all rush. If you play zerg look up Spanishiwas "Ice Fisher" build to counter most stuff
Edit: it will run on your comp they made the graphics with enough bottom end for really old computers

It's still a fun game, though it's lost most of its playerbase because of Starcraft 2, but I'm sure there will still be enough people on multiplayer for you to enjoy yourself.
I agree. It's harder to go back, once you've played Starcraft 2, though. One game that is awesome is the original Command & Conquer. They sell it in the Combo pack called decade. That would be a fun classic game to play too.
On a related note... I've been wanting to try SC since I saw some of the multiplayer videos on youtube. Should I buy SC1 and play it first, and then get SC 2? Or, can I just jump into SC2 and be 'up to speed' on the game?
Just get SC2. It is easier to learn, has better graphics. The balance is't as good as it was in the first yet but still is a very good game.
Definitely go with SC2. It's better in every way. There's no point in trying SC1 first. When SC2 installs, you'll get the back story.
I played through the original last year when SC II came out. I didn't want to spend $60 and I hadn't played the original since it came out and barely touched Brood War.
Since I'm not into multiplayer even in RTS games then I went only after the single player which I think still held up well. Of course the graphics aren't as pretty, but the game is still a blast to play.

I think you can play offline for the campaign. It just doesn't allow for Achievements and online game saving.
