Does the 17" MB Pro use the old latches to close?

Ive done a search for this on the forum but nothing seems to hit just right.

So my question is this:

Does the Mac Book Pro 17" use the old PowerBook G4 design of magnetic latches that come down and hook the screen closed or does it use the Mac Book design of a magnetic system that holds the screen in place?

My PowerBook just lost those little magnetic pieces that hold the screen in place when closed. I had to replace those before (out of warranty) and it was around $400!!! I figure that with a trade in and a little extra case I would just go ahead and get a newer one since CS3 is coming out anyway.

He meant that the latches are pulled out by magnets. Yes all the MBPs use the latches, they each have 2 now. The old 15 inch powerbook only had one, but the isight in the middle of the top of the screen makes it require 2 as well. And the 17 had 2 just because it was so wide.

400$ is ridiculous for that! What was the cost composed of?

I wonder if it is possible to rig some type of magnetic latch mechanism yourself? Like the Macbooks have...

Well the break down is this if I remember correctly.

275 for the top portion of the PowerBook - the area part where the speakers, track pad, etc. are. They couldn't just replace the button part!

25 for shipping b/c I couldn't get to the place that was going to fix it. It sounds lazy but I kid you not, I'm on the go so much and for me to get down to Cincinnati, it takes a miracle.

100 for labor and taxes.

so about $400. This happened on my old 1Ghz PowerBook before I got the 1.67Ghz one.

Oh well!
