Does the 27" Thunderbolt Display work with the current Mac Pro?

Simple question, hope to get an answer. Just wondering because the current Mac Pro doesn´t have a Thunderbolt port.

One thing I also should mention, that I plan to use it as a second monitor, already have a 30" Apple Cinema Display.

So basically if my ACD would break, Apple wouldn´t have any monitor to offer.

Or if someone would buy a Mac Pro, they couldn´t buy an Apple monitor or two to go with it, but still it is sold in the Mac Pro specs section, even the 2nd monitor option is there.

Kind weird move from Apple. :eek:

Apple still sells the old 27". Look under display on shop Mac section.

Oh yes, I didn´t notice that. My mistake!

Same price hmm...

Now I just need to know is the new Mac Pro coming in January 2012 and with Thunderbolt! And can I use the 30" ACD and the 27" Thunderbolt display together with it??? :confused:

So much talk about Apple dropping the Mac Pro all together. :eek:

They work...i have two of them on my desk connected to my 2010 Mac Pro. The Thunderbolt just acts as a mini display port.
 
Nope

I thought the Thunderbolt display would work on my 2010 macbook pro, but since it only has Mini DisplayPort, and not Thunderbolt it doesn't work. Strangely thunderbolt is based off of Mini DisplayPort but it's not backwards compatible it seems.

In any case I bought the Thunderbolt 27" and had to go back and exchange it for the Mini Display Port version.

Yes, I understand this now, but thankins is saying that the Thunderbolt Displays are working with the current Mac Pros.

I was under the impression that the old (non-TB) 27" ACD will work with new Mac's that have TB, but non-TB Mac's will not work with the new TB displays.
 
It's not really that confusing.

TB Mac --> ATD --> ACD works
TB Mac --> ACD works
Non TB Mac --> ATD does not work

TB is not "based" on display port. It simply uses the same plug and the protocol can carry a display port signal. A display port device can be on the end of the chain and not in the middle. In layman's terms it can only understand the display port part of the thunderbolt protocol. The thunderbolt and display port hardware is completely different in terms of the controller.

If you have a machine that has Thunderbolt, you CAN use either a 27" Cinema Display or a 27" Thunderbolt Display.

I am using a 27" Cinema Display with my 2011 Mac Mini that has a thunderbolt port.
 
This is what it says on the Apple store site (UK)

Thunderbolt Display compatibility.

Thunderbolt-enabled Macs, including the current generations of MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac are fully compatible with the Apple Thunderbolt Display. Customers with Macs that only support Mini DisplayPort output, such as the Mac Pro and MacBook, as well as previous generations of MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iMac can use the 27-inch LED Cinema Display.
 
I'd just get a 30" Dell when your 30" ACD dies.

Or the 27" Dell that's antiglare.
