Does the App Store ever get cleaned up?

I was wondering if the app store ever gets cleaned up? I know Apple likes to post how many apps there are in the app store, but seriously some stuff needs to go.

I was looking through my "purchased" apps just to see what I used in the past. Pretty interesting. I also came across several apps I sometimes that haven't been updated in forever.

All of these apps and yet most have them can't even talk to each other thanks to the iOS policy of locking everything down.

Apple really should have a policy that if a developer can't update their up at least once every 18 months, that app gets deleted.
 
Yeah, cause it's a really good idea to remove apps that people have paid for and might need to download again. :rolleyes:

Then they should have a filter for: iOS 7 only.

Yes apple does delete apps when the developer does not pay their dev fee.

A huge reason why developers don't update apps is because it hurts app sales. There is no benefit to updating apps and you actually lose all your reviews. Unless my app is severely broken or I have a game changing update I would not update my apps. This is the way most developers feel if you take a look at some of the dev forums.

If apple wanted devs to update they could simply give ranking bonuses for things like retina ready 4inch ready etc. but they don't care so the devs have nothing to gain by updating.

And yet various apps keep on getting updates fairly regularly.

Vast majority, but not all. Apple were the ones who took charge of the apps and their delivery to avoid a bad customer experience. Remember this? The reasoning behind taking charge of an App Store was to get rid of apps that don't work from view of the consumer.

Surely they hide the older iOS apps that don't work on the latest iOS and vice versa?

Perhaps if an older app is using some API that has been deprecated (although with backward compatibility that's less likely) or perhaps is crashing due to some weird issue, then sure, but that's not likely a common case. But yes, I guess there are cases when some older apps will be removed because they aren't working for a strange reason, just not something that would seem to happen much.

As far as I know apps are never removed for using older api. For example if you download an app that is built for ios 6 it will still run the old keyboard style. It's still running in the ios 6 framework on their controls etc.
