Does the App Store renders hacking obsolete?

Hello all,
I'm a new proud owner of an iPod Touch 32GB, just got it yesterday!!!

Initially I was thinking of hacking it like wht everyone else used to do. Now that the apps store is up and running with thousands of applications, I wonder wht is the use for hacking aymore.

Can the experts please tell me why they need to hack anymore?

Also, I've downloaded about 30 apps from iTunes, SOMETIMES some of them just crash for no apparent reason... can anybody help me on this?

The SDK is too limiting and I want to skin customize my themes.

You can get all of those apps for free, fully customize your ipod, install apps that would violate apples SDK, etc..

It means setting your own icons for applications, changing the home screen background (currently you can only change the lock screen wallpaper), changing the look of the dock, keyboard, etc.

Hacking allows five things:

MMS, System Utilities, Adult Content, Themes, and Emulators.

System utilities includes everything from being able to have your new email displayed on the lock screen to battery life percentage to terminal commands.

Bullsh*t. The apps in cydia are like the apps I get from yum and apt repos, they are open source. Actually, some are paid for, and that seems silly to me, but there are certainly non free apps out there that are only on jailbroken phones too.

Customizing themes means that I use winterboard to apply themes all over my system. If apple would allow this, I'd have no need for jailbreaking. As it is, I sit and wait patiently every time a new firmware is released, hoping the dev team will jailbreak it soon.

See, I would argue the complete opposite. It's kind of hard to screw up a toggle switch. The ability to use a Video Recorder is worth it alone. The video quality and sound is amazing. I never thought I would jailbreak, until I took the time to research everything. You can always Restore back to factory firmware if you choose very easily. As mentioned, there are a lot of open source applications available that beat the pants off what is/was available in the App Store. Take Netshare for example....piece of crap when compared to iPhonemodem.de

Who uses MMS? People who don't have email on their phones, which is a lot of people. I also hate having to remember a new stupid code to type into a website dverytime someone sends me an MMS. It's annoying, I don't even bother when I get an MMS.

Very true. That is why I don't jailbreak.

I don't use any of those five.

Dude these statements are completely ignorant...

1) Emulators are illegal yes I will give you that.
2) MMS... not everyone has email on their phones, so to send someone a simple picture from your phone to another phone is trivial.
3) System utilities I will give you that, but allow a flag for ADVANCED users to enable it. But if someone dumb enables it and screws up there is always restore...
4) Adult Content... if people want porn on their phones then let them, this is the age where we can encode porns to mp4 and load them in iTunes.
5) Themes... the BIGGEST reason why I jail broke my phone. Apple's default icons SUCK and of course the fact I can change the lame SMS tones to my own is a HUGE thing. IMHO the Blackberry has this down to the T with its Audio Profiles. Apple should look at RIM's design and mimic it on the iPhone to give the users what they want.

I agree that the App Store is great for games and many different utilities, but the way in which Apple chooses to limit access to certain functions is disappointing. As an example, Apple should provide a video recorder, a better camera application, and voice dialing (at a minimum). The fact that it doesn't provide those applications and doesn't allow a third party developer to do so is unbelievable! Voice dialing should be mandatory on a phone with no keyboard so that people can make phone calls without having to look at the screen! An MMS app should also be provided - for those who don't see a need for it, just delete it! The ability to change themes should also be allowed. All of this can be done, as has been shown by the developers who have created some excellent applications! Finally, tethering should also be allowed - as long as users pay a fee to AT&T for it, I don't see a problem with it. AT&T has the option for other phones, so I don't see why the iPhone doesn't have that option. It is totally ridiculous! Overall, I don't see a good reason for which Apple has not included such basic features that are included in many smartphones. At this point, jailbreaking is a necessity for those who want to add some features that Apple is not permitting on the phone. It's a shame, really, that Apple has chosen this path. Hopefully Android will light a fire under its butt and make it provide its users what they are demanding.

It won't render hacking obsolete. But the App store might be so convenient that 90%+ of iPhone users won't bother with anything but the App store, so that's where most of the best developers will spend their time if they want the biggest audience for their apps.
