If you do buy a UPS, try and get one other users have reported works with MacOS X. I purchased a Tripp Lite OMNI900LCD and I cannot get the auto-shutdown to work via the USB port. It also doesn't reliably report the amount of time left on the battery/etc.. It does allow the computer to run for about 15 minutes, but it won't gracefully shut down the machine.

Hi,
I have one but stopped using it since it had a negative effect on my computers.
I guess because the power line fluctuates (brown-outs) too much where I live (Calgary, Canada),
I had a warning &/or a shut-down every week - as opposed to before that NEVER happened...
So here is one example for that something 'safer' doesn't actually work.

If you don't use the software UPS units are great. We have occasional power glitches but power rarely goes out completely. No need to use the auto shutdown software in most cases.

Cheers,
