Does the iPad resize and re-encode photo's when you sync?

Talking to mate about iPad size he needs.

He told me needed BIG iPad as he wanted to move his entire photo album to it (20GB)

I told him, no need to be this big. Can get free software to batch convert pics down from 5, 8, 10 megapixel camera originals to 1024x768 iPad screen res.

Why have higher rez photos on it anyway?

Then stuck me, does he need to worry?

Does iTunes and the iPad actually re-size/encode pics anyway for the iPad when you put them on?

Yes, itunes does optimize the pictures, which reduces the files size. I dont know if there is a way around this or not, but I don't need anything higher resolution for iPad use. I have around 200GB of pictures, and I have only been into photography for a year now

Note that iTunes does not reduce them all the way down to 1024X768 because then zooms would be poor. I believe it reduces to somewhere around 2000-3000 pixels wide (very rough guess). It probably uses stronger JPG compression than your average camera, so it will reduce your file sizes if you have 5+MP photos at a low compression setting.

I tried comparing a photo I had sized to 1024X768 with the same photo resized automatically by iTunes. The iTunes version had much more detail and could handle quite a bit of zoom before becoming fuzzy. The 1024 version was useless for zooming.

yes, iTunes resizes photos before transferring them to the iPad

when syncing photos in iPhoto via iTunes to the iPad, the JPEG file resolution seems to be reduced to 2304x1536, if the source images are larger than that

I just checked this with a photo from a 10Mpixel camera (3888x2592 original)

The original JPEG was 3MBytes - the iPad "optimized" version is 627kBytes

UPDATE:

as mentioned in another similar thread, I notice that aspect ratio of the original photo is maintained when iTunes resizes them for iPad

so: 3:2 images (eg from DSLR) get resized to 2304x1536
and 4:3 images (eg from compact camera) get resized to 2048x1536

FWIW, my iPhoto library shows as 9.9GB in finder. When I sync all my photos to the iPad, they show as taking up 2.2GB in the iTunes display showing content on the iPad.

Really pleased with the optimization/compression!
