I've still got a reasonably large library of tv shows and movies I've ripped from my own DVDs and Blu-Rays. I share them on my home network to be played on Apple TVs by using an external HDD connected to my Mac Mini, with media sharing enabled.

Does the TV app support a NAS-hosted media library? Its been so long since I looked this - I remember you couldn't have a standalone NAS working with iTunes, but presumably if my Mac Mini is always-on and acting as the server, if I have a drive mapped and the file is accessible, that will work fine?

Thanks

Yes, it does. I use a 10TB drive for my library on my Mac mini.
Nice one, thanks for replying so quickly!

Can I ask what NAS you have? I was thinking about a Synology as they seem to get consistently good reviews.

I don't have anything like Synology. I just have a WB EasyStore10TB drive attached to the mini. Not long ago, I pointed a M1 MBA library to an attached drive on the mini and it worked fine.

Synology is a bit cheaper and easier to use. QNAP offers both more hardware features (10 GbE, Thunderbolt, HDMI, etc.) and more software features, at the cost of a bit more complexity and slightly greater cost. I prefer QNAP.

look at the app infuse pro,

Infuse is great for an easy to setup server. I prefer Plex which has a rich environment for display options, playlists, ratings, viewing history database, etc.

If you are wanting this for your Apple TVs, look at the app infuse pro, its fabulous. I'm using a WD PR4100 box, works seamlessly. I use it as a repository for all sorts of stuff available thoughout the house, time machine backups etc.

Agree with this, Infuse Pro is great, I use QNAP NAS, that's my personal preference as the reviews I looked into were favourable, no knock on Synology though, I've also read good reviews on them.

Very happy with QNAP.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I use the shared library a lot less than in past years and am probably the only person in the house who will use it so I'm happy with fast ethernet rather than gigabit speeds, hence looking at lower end options. I'll check out ANQP and Infuse Pro. Thanks!

resurrecting this thread as I need some help:
I upgraded to Big Sur from Mojave this week, I have ~ 350 or so ripped DVDs that I used to have in iTunes. On my Apple TV ALL movies, iTunes purchased or ripped, would show up in a single list, if I recall right it was under computer/Library not the ATV TV App, but fine.
Now, in the TV app on the Mac, only iTunes purchased movies show up under Library, none of my ripped ones. I played and imported a couple and they get moved into a "Home video" folder (I suppose could create a folder "DVD movies" and import to that one). BUT, I'd much rather have them in the movies folder so that all my movies are in a single folder! Can I do that and if so, how?

On my ATV, the movies I imported describing above do show up under computer/Home videos ...
