When I purchased a Magic Mouse 2 a few years ago inside an Apple store, it wobbled slightly when on a flat desk. I assume the two black rails were not perfectly flat.

I went back and they agreed to exchange it for another one, and that didn't wobble at all.

Today, I just purchased another Magic Mouse 2 (new USB version, sold by Amazon directly), and it wobbles. I know for sure it's not the desk, because I can do a direct comparison with my old Magic Mouse 2.

I was wondering if the wobble goes away over time as it wears evenly, or if I should immediately ask for a replacement?

Thanks

Definitely get it replaced. It should not wobble at all.
It depends on the surface but the abrasion of my Magic Mouse is absolutely minimal even after daily use for years.
So I wouldn't count on it flattening evenly any time soon.

Thanks. I've seen threads where people say they've purchased 3 wobbly mice in a row, and so I hope I'm not just being impatient with wearing the mouse in.

This is gonna be hard to explain to Amazon customer services if I purchase 3 or 4 and keep doing returns.

The one I purchased at the Apple store did not wobble. Are you sure your surface is flat?

After returning it for a second time, I would just buy it from Apple. I’m always a little suspicious about buying Apple products from Amazon. If I buy it from Apple, I know it’s the real thing but with buying it from Amazon, who knows where they sourced it from

Are you sure your surface is flat?

Yes - both because I've tested it on a glass surface that I'm pretty sure isn't warped, and because I can compare it to my existing Magic Mouse 2 on a variety of flat surfaces.

It's not a huge wobble - it's enough that I would just live with it if I didn't think anything better existed.

But it makes a very noticeable noise if I hold the mouse on the desk normally with my thumb and little finger, and lightly rotate my wrist counter and anti-clockwise.

To explain it another way, if I make *very* light contact with the left side of the mouse with my thumb, nudging it makes a very noticeable sound as I cause it to rock. It's a very tiny rotation, but enough to make a very noticaeble sound.

I've just put in an order for a new one - hopefully I'll get lucky! It was sold direct from Amazon (and not from a third-party supplier that lists on Amazon), and it looked pretty legitimate when it arrived.

Definitely don’t live with it because for the price you pay, the mouse should be perfect! It makes me wonder if there’s a quality control issue

It's currently discounted from £79 to £53 on Amazon UK - I hope that isn't because it's a bad batch!

The first time I purchased the Magic Mouse 2 was when it was a newly released product several years ago, and I had purchased it within a few days of its release inside an Apple Store. Since that was wobbly too (before they replaced it), I wonder if most people use spongy mouse mats and simply don't notice the imperfection.

Amazon.de also offers both versions (Lightning & USB-C) for 60€. Sounds more like a Black Friday deal - hopefully.
Mine will arrive on Saturday and I will report back. I use it directly on a table with flat and smooth Resopal surface.
(I ordered a spare Lightning one as my main Mac can't run Sequoia and therefore the USB-C version is of no use to me.)

That's great, thank you! My replacement order will arrive Friday, so I too will report here on whether that's wobbly too.

The 2nd Magic Mouse just arrived - it still has a wobble, but it wobbles less than the mouse that arrived a few days ago.

However, it's not perfectly flat like my much older Magic Mouse 2 is.

I guess I'll have to consider rolling the dice again and ordering a third...

Clarification: when holding the mouse and testing the wobble, the white top part always wobbles, and that's normal, since it is the thing that you push on to click.

The wobble I'm talking about is when you only hold the mouse by the silver part underneath, and the base of the mouse wobbles because the rails aren't perfectly flat.

That's unfortunate.
Mine (Lightning) also just arrived.
No wobble whatsoever. Tested on glas table.

Thanks for letting me know. Also, even though I've told Amazon I'm returning these two mice, it won't let me order a third...

Update: luckily, another store is price matching it, so I will get a third mouse after all...

Third mouse just arrived, that wobbles too....

At least one of the three wobbles is a little less than the other two.

I can order more, but this is getting silly...

Apple has effectively given up on designing and selling mice. They keep this around just so they have something to include in the iMac box.

The quality control on these mice is not the greatest. Many come with a wobbly top glass plate as well. It took me several exchanges to finally get one that doesnt have a wobbly top glass plate and I was being told it was “normal” by the staff at the store but I insisted I wanted to exchange it for another one. Took about 4 exchanges to get a proper mouse. Based on my experience, the ones from Amazon are the worst for some reason. it’s as if apple is aware of the varying build quality of some of these products and chooses to offer the better ones to be sold at Apple Stores and gives the rest to other retailers

I tried dragging the new Magic Mouse firmly across my desk a hundred times or so, to see if it would even out (it didn't help).

The wear pattern on the new mouse was interesting - there were noticable wear spots in the locations circled in the photo below (the bottom two are hard to see due to lighting conditions).

I think that maybe Apple decide that it's difficult to engineer the mouse to be perfectly flat, and so they'd rather it's wobbly because the four corners are protruding, than it's wobbly because the center of the black rails are protruding.

A mouse not being flat... quite embarassing.
For comparison, I did the same dragging with my non-wobbly Lightning one.

Oh, they removed the Apple logo on the USB-C version...

Thanks for the photo - the wear on the rails look like my old lightning magic mouse that is many years old.

How come you never removed the sticker at the bottom? :)

Because that's the mouse that just arrived yesterday and that I only unpacked and dragged around to update this thread. The angle and reflection make it look more worn down than it actually is.

It is purely meant as a spare in case my current Magic Mouse dies.
As I cannot install the latest macOS on my Macs, the USB-C version is useless to me and I fear the Lightning version will be hard to come by in the future at a reasonable price. Therefore the decadence of hoarding a spare mouse 😉.

Ouch, yeah I'd be terrified if I was stuck on an old macOS, never knowing when something important won't work any more.
