Dear All,

I am looking to bring new life into my wife's old MacBook Air (I probably won't) and came across an offer for a

MacBook Air 2017 A1466 logic board i7 2.2 Ghz with 16GB

Is that real? I thought they only went up to 8GB?

I most likely won't buy, but I am very curious wth that is!

Ideas???

Thank you and apologies if this has been covered before

As the other poster said it's just been upgraded. People are doing CPU and RAM upgrades on these boards now. If the seller has a good rep I wouldn't worry too much.

I understand the technical feasibility and I would definitely like to implant one of those in my wife's old Mac. I was curious whether you guys knew about anyone doing this on a larger scale.

What bothers me a bit is a) the "why?" (what exactly is the business case?) since they claim they are selling them as new. Why copy a 7year old logic board? Is there that much demand? And b) the "If the seller has a good rep" part, which I find quite difficult to judge on Aliexpress!

The "new" probably just means they've gone over it - or they're grabbing spare parts somewhere.

There's a market for the original Air form factor, given that the 2018-2019 models had defective keyboards and the 2018-2020 models overheat like crazy, and the M1 and newer still tend to be a good deal more expensive than "swap board into old computer"

DosDude (a member here) does the upgrades as well, but they're US based so that would be a factor.

Yes, this

"... that the 2018-2019 models had defective keyboards and the 2018-2020 models overheat like crazy, and the M1 and newer still tend to be a good deal more expensive than "swap board into old computer""

sounds reasonable.

I am currently deciding whether to replace my i5 / 1.6 Ghz 4GB with a "normal" i7 / 2.2 Ghz 8GB or the one I mentioned above, the i7 / 2.2 Ghz 16GB

If you're going to spend the money to breath new life into this machine to make it last longer, i would go with the 16gb option if they are a reputable seller.
