a 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 17"
here's a picture from my friend's cellphone. Could we just replace the inverter and that's it? It doesn't seem too difficult.

weird. good luck with it. ifixit.com would probibly give you a step by step instructions on how to replace it. It's helped me with slot drive and hard drive replacement.

That's almost identical to the problem we have with a similar 2006 iMac where I work...

I remember when we first discovered it, it was reported all over these forums (this was quite a while ago!) and it turned out that a bunch of iMac's all produced within a range of weeks (similar serial no's) were coming up with this problem, all around the same time and after the warranty. Apple would not replace/repair without charging a large fee which was not worth it (despite the fact it appears to be a common fault which would have always been present but took time to show). I seem to remember Apple said you'd need to replace the 'mainboard' or in other words, motherboard - despite the fact external displays are absolutely fine so it's obviously an issue specific to the display.

In the end we have bought a new monitor and hooked it up to the iMac - far cheaper, acceptable result.

It looks like problem described by Jon (common for certain series of 2006 iMacs). LCD is damaged, for sure but i can't tell where the reason is. Check this thread and verify machine's S/N: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1464760&start=0&tstart=0 Replacing LCD seems to work for some but others reported that issue is back after some time with new LCD: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1532092

the serial number seems to be in the range.

So decision is up to you: replace (certainly damaged) LCD and see what happens later, use it as is with external display or sell it. Logic board exchange might be not worth, like JonnyUK wrote.
