I've had my eye on the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 (the 57-inch mini LED monitor), but I know people have faced issues getting the full resolution at 120Hz through a single Thunderbolt cable. Many have reported needing to use the HDMI 2.1 port to achieve 7680x2160 at 120Hz.

Now that the new MacBook Pros support Thunderbolt 5, does this mean I should be able to get the full 7680x2160 resolution at 120Hz through just a Thunderbolt connection? If so, that would be a game-changer for me.

Would it support the full res at 120hz with the lid open too?

Also, does anyone have recommendations for a Thunderbolt 5 dock that would support 7680x2160 at 120Hz?

It's possible you would even get the full 240hz if you can find a cable that will pass TB5 to DP2.1, since this monitor is 240hz capable over DP2.1. These things often need to be tested to be sure because the handoff between cables and adapters can get screwy, but the bandwidth is definitely there.

I'm just hoping my Samsung CRG9 5120x1440 @ 120hz is going to be supported! These oddball aspect ratios aren't listed in the Apple Tech specs. The monitor only has HDMI 2.0 so that means 60hz... but DP 1.4 supports the 120Hz... if MacOS will drive it.

Specs page says the Max will do DP2.1, but it also says displays are limited to 8K @60, or 4K @240.

I will really be disaapointed if a 5120x1440 at 120 wont be supported..is it not supported with thunderbolt 4?

Do you mean hdmi 2.1? Or DP through a dock?
I mean what Apple says. The Pro can do DP 1.4, the Max DP 2.1:
M4 and M4 Pro

  • Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colours and:
  • Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt, or one external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz over HDMI
  • One external display supported at 8K resolution at 60Hz or one external display at 4K resolution at 240Hz over HDMI
M4 Max

  • Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colours and:
  • Up to four external displays: Up to three external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz over HDMI
  • Up to three external displays: Up to two external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one external display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or one external display with 4K resolution at 240Hz over HDMI
Thunderbolt 4 digital video output

Support for native DisplayPort 1.4 output over USB-C

Thunderbolt 5 digital video output

Support for native DisplayPort 2.1 output over USB-C

HDMI digital video output

  • Support for one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz

If anybody happen to have gotten their hands on a new MBP (m4+) and happens to have the 57inch g9 and also has a thunderbolt 5 dock, let us know the resolution/frame rate you are getting.

Greatly appreciated

I was looking through Thunderbolt 5 docks and I saw this one which the review claims can do 3 4k monitors at 144Hz...does that mean m4 max/pro can achieve this using this dock? Or does apple put limitations on the chip ?

As you guys mentioned, apple says "...and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 144Hz over HDMI"

if it does not support 2 4k displays at 120hz, I might seriously consider holding out and staying with my intel 2019 mbp. Not hating on it but if im gonna buy a laptop that will last me 4-5 years +, I would really like the uniformity of having the same refresh rate on both my laptop display and monitors (wether one big 8k monitor (57inch) or 2 4k monitors)

i have a M1 Macbook Air and it supports my CRG9 just fine

i have a Thunderbolt 3 to DP cable and it runs the full resolution at 120Hz, the only issue i have is HDR turned on looks awful so i have it in SDR. I’ve heard that some cables don’t work right so you need to be sure to read that it specifically works with your hardware. I got mine on Amazon but i forget the specific brand

Thanks - Yes, I tested my wife's M2 and it worked great. The M4 showed up last monday and I've been loving it.

Yes, I agree that HDR is really bad... still bad on the M4. It was just as bad from my Mac Pro with an RX580> DP so it's probably the monitor. No big deal - looks great to me.

Thank you! good to know it works with 5,120 x 1,440 at 120hz through tb3, hopefully this means tb5 works 7680x2160 at 120Hz.

TB5 is not needed as my M3 Max MBP is connected to the 57" Odyssey Neo G9 at full Dual 4K resolution at 120hz. Tested on both HDMI 2.1 and DP 2.1 cables. Also tested using a USB-DP cable through the Brydge Pro Dock.

Thank you so much! Very useful info for me! Excited to get both the M4 Pro mbp and the 57inch monitor. Only thing this is I really like the one cable setup (thunderbolt dock)..

Ur getting this by connecting directly to the MBP's hdmi I presume? I hate to sound picky but if Im about to spend 4k CAD + , and keep this laptop for 4 to 5 years, I would like to use it by connecting a single thunderbolt cable to the dock instead of having to plug 2 cables (hdmi and tb) everytime I want to dock. I know its maybe not possible bur if anyone got their hands on a new tb 5 dock, I would greatly appreciate it as well

I also wouldnt mind getting 2 4k monitors if they can run them at 120hz (through a single tb cable ofc)

And I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but what do you mean using a DP 2.1 cable? Since the macbook doesn't include a DP port, im guessing ur talking of a DP to thunderbolt cable? Or do you mean DP to hdmi cable?

Thank you very much either for confirming i can get the full res at 120 (by using a hdmi)

It's going to be a dream. Enjoy. For TB docks, I float between the Caldigit TS4 and Brydge Pro Dock.

Yes. Prior to switching to the bridge dock, the MacBook was connected to the monitor through the HDMI port.

but what do you mean using a DP 2.1 cable?
For my TB4 dock (BrydgePro) it doesn't have HDMI or DP ports. It's all TB4. I did use a DP to TB cable

Direct to the dock. With the M4 having TB5, could do direct to TB port on mac. (Haven't tried it myself)

So you are getting the full res at 120hz with the monitor connected to the brydge prodock? Sorry for asking for confrimation, just want to be sure before I worder!

Thank you greatly
