Does Time Machine backup iCloud documents?

Simple question, are all the important spreadsheets and documents I have created in Pages and Numbers and saved in iCloud, backed up in my time machine backups that I run on my mac?

If for some reason my iCloud drive became corrupted or there was a problem that caused me to lose all files in the cloud (this has happened to some people - albeit rarely) would I be able to restore them from time machine? Note these files are not saved on my local drive, just in iCloud that the 'save' menu choice gives you.

Some of my files are really important for my business and I can't afford to lose them.

I can still open my iCloud documents in TextEdit when the wifi is off, so I think there's a local copy saved somewhere. Maybe in the Library.

That's a good point. Testing now, I too can open Numbers documents saved in iCloud when my wifi is turned off. The files must also be cached locally somewhere. The question then is whether these are backed up to Time Machine or not.

They are saved locally in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/ and this folder is backed up by Time Machine.

Just click the desktop then hit shift-command-g and enter ~/Library/Mobile Documents/ in the popup box to get to the folder. Just look, but don't touch as that folder is not meant to be tinkered with.
