Does Time Machine work on an external hard drive, not SSD drive, using the AFPS format?

For Bigsur, does Time Machine work okay on an external hard drive, not SSD drive, using the AFPS format?

Reason I’m asking, I’ve read that when transitioning to Monterey, I should have my Time machine backups on AFPS, moving over.

I say just find your sore emails, pictures and Music libraries and back these up pus saved email boxes! One pace you should bookmark at Apple Support Mail Server settings for iCloud email clients if you use a big online email database!

Is the answer a flat 'no' for APFS on HDD external backup drives?

Or is the below 2017 article out of date, and APFS on HDD is now possible?

TM works on my Lacie 1GB HDD with Monterey and it also worked with Big Sur.
Doesn't TM format the drive APFS anyway, whatever it was before?

Yes. You have no choice when using Time Machine from Big Sur or Monterey. The external drive will be formatted to APFS.
