Resolved Does TV need to be on for Apple TV Airplay audio?

Will Airplay audio work on an Apple TV even if the TV isn't turned on? Or will it work so long as the audio receiver is on?

I'm thinking of buying one mainly for Airplay audio use, but will get the Airport Express if the TV must be on.

The TV does not have to be turned on as long as you are running the audio through the Optical audio port or have a hdmi cable plugged in to a receiver

No, not if you use the optical connection.
Don't know about HDMI, but wouldn't think so,
