Hello everyone,
This is probably an elementary question... I've got a 2019 MacBook Pro and recently bought an iPad Pro 12.9. Sidecar is pretty neat but was wondering how it works, technically speaking. So I gather it uses bluetooth to establish a connection and then wi-fi direct after, right? I was looking at activity monitor to see if I could tell if by using Sidecar I am using less RAM and CPU on the Mac but I am not sure if I can tell or know for sure.

I was initially trying to drive two external displays with this MBP and it was choking under some workflows due to lack of integrated graphics and only 8 gigs of system ram. For some things I am finding Sidecar to be useful and its nice having a second display I can take wherever, essentially. I am still not sure if I will keep the setup and just replace both with a 16-inch MBP but I was curious about this.

I guess I am trying to find reasons to keep the iPad and if it will take some computing stress of the MBP, then dandy. I think its a super well-built tablet and great for content consumption but for MY workflow, I am trying to see how best I can fit it in. I'm basically in Office, Spotify, and Safari a lot. I know I won't be using the iPad for financial modeling on it but I think it could be good for editing Powerpoints, writing, using it as a Spotify remote, drawing for fun, Sidecar, using it as hotspot for my Mac, and the like. I do love the 12.9 inch size, no doubt. So far I like it a lot but maybe not for the cost of the iPad itself, Smart Keyboard folio, and pencil) and especially the Pencil. I know I'd be wanting a bugger screen and power if I went with iPad Air or the 11 inch, I think. Though I suppose there's not much to lose as it is on a 0% Verizon device plan (and $100 promo credit over 24 months). As far as being able to afford it, yes, that is not an issue- just making sure I can get the most bang/fun for my buck.

I do wish the Pencil could do more and that I could use it to go "home" but then again, maybe that'll come with time or future Pencil hardware updates. I may also get a paper like screen protector because I am not wild about the feel of the Pencil on the screen but that's TBD. It's one of those things that is definitely fun to play with and have but I just had unrealistic exceptions, maybe. It is my first iPad ever so perhaps there is bit of a learning curve?

Sorry for the sort of off the wall post and kind of going on but felt like coming here and seeing if I can make up my mind somehow.I do have another 25 days or so to make-up my mind. Would appreciate not being flamed but hoping for a constructive conversation.

Best,
Jay

My 16" MacBook Pro definitely seems to perform better when using Sidecar. Maybe it has to do with the iPad having a smaller screen or something?

Although I don’t use sidecar myself but technically it shouldn’t make any difference in terms of load on your MacBook as everything is still being run on the MacBook itself. If anything, I’d think the data transfer between the iPad and the MacBook will increase use of RAM compared to having nothing connected at all.
