I guess I'm assuming it works like my Macbook Pro, where I can go into the "Display" system preference and visually see the slider adjust (and the monitor/keyboard dim or brighten) as I turn on/off the lights. But is it different with the iPhone? Because I set it on "auto-brightness" yet wheter I'm inside or outside or whatever, I check, and the slider is at full brightness (all the way to the right). What's going on? You guys gettin this?

You adjust the brightness level to where you like it with auto-brightness set on. It then adjusts accordingly, it does not move the slider. If you have it set to full, it will almost always be at full. Also, its not as active as the PB, its a tad slower to respond.
I feel like a moron. I've read this paragraph over and over, and, except for the last sentence, I don't get what you're saying. I adjust it to where I want it with auto-brightness set on? And then it adjusts accordingly? What? I think my confusion stems from that, like a Powerbook/MBP, I think that slider should be dynmaically changing as ambient light changes. Am I wrong? Will it always stay where I set it, but the display will still get dimmer and brighter as it deems appropriate?
think of it this way: wherever you have the slider set is the maximum brightness it will ever achieve. it will self-adjust the screen brightness on its own up to that level and no higher. the slider never moves on its own - it's just how you set how bright you want the screen to get as it self-adjusts.
And to "test" this, flip the auto-brightness on and off. If you are in a darker room the screen should fade a bit or brighten as you turn the auto-brightness off. If you are outdoors it will not adjust most likely, if its bright out, since a brighter screen is required for better outdoor use.

I kept wondering why my slider was always at mid point no matter where I was. Screen always looked great so I didn't bother to research but the question came to mind every time I looked at the setting.
I think the auto-brightness is pretty poor on the iPhone compared to the MBP.
It's a great idea, but I think it should go a lot dimmer in dark rooms, that's how I'd like it anyway.

The iPhone 3g, despite having an extra ambient light sensor (or is it extra proximity sensor?), does a worse job of adjusting the brightness than the original. I think it may, however, be a software issue. Sometimes it will just arbitrarily change brightness with no change in a dark room. Or sometimes it will go back and forth within a few minutes under constant room light. It could be that it is overly sensitive and they calibrated it so that it would adjust it too much. The original iPhone was much smoother in its adjustments. I believe this could be easily fixed in a software update. Also smoothing it out over a period of say a minute or two so it isn't as apparent to the user would be a nice feature. I just want it to stay out of the way. Also, sometimes I will be in a dark room before I go to bed and the screen will be nice and bright. Then I will lock the screen but forget to check "one last thing" and when I reopen it, the thing is dimmed down too much. Hmmm...
Yeah, I agree. I think it's a software fix, but who knows.
Apple has a buncha bugs to work out, but.... it's still the best phone I've ever had. Just a lot of room for improvement.

Auto-brightness works on my iPhone, but, could be better. To test yours, in a bright room put your thumb over the area to the left of the earpiece. The display should go dimmer when you do.
