I picked up my iPad after 3 days of inaction and it was down to 55% battery. Odd, I thought, perhaps I beat it up at the weekend and the battery got low. Plugged it in and charged it up to 100%, hit the sleepy switch on the top.

24 hours later its at 80%. It's done nothing unless elves have been playing youtube vids on it whilst I'm at work, it's really sat in the same spot asleep waiting for me to find something fun to try.

What's it doing with all that battery power? I can leave my iPhone out 4 days and it's still charged and that has a battery the size of .. well the size of an iPhone.

Do all iPads eat power when asleep?

Does anyone know if it is possible for a poorly written push app to drain battery faster?

Or, does it make a difference if a person has many apps with push notifications turned on?

Do you leave WiFi on when you put your iPad to sleep? I find my iPad's battery drains fast when WiFi is active while sleeping vs. being off. When WiFi is off, my iPad uses maybe 2% a day in sleep mode.

Hmm that's interesting. Too bad there isn't a way to automate it so that it would automatically turn off WiFi before sleeping and turn it back on when waking.

I am surprised you can leave your iPad for 24 hours :D. I use mine too frequently to notice.

I always turn my wifi off at night and/or when I'm not using it.
I've charged it up and let it sit for 10+ hours and it was still at 100%. No drain at all.

The wifi thing makes sense. I've woken up the pad many times to find mail waiting for me.

Unlike the iPhone, the iPad does not sleep the WiFi when the screen is locked. Thus email and notifications will still be delivered.

I might lose about 5% on the battery per day, if that, whilst it sleeps. But to be honest, I've never left my iPad alone for more than 5-6 hours at a time :) That's a guess based on the 1-2% change I've seen over a several hour period (with the WiFi on).

To the OP, try rebooting and a complete discharge/charge cycle and see if that helps.

Never turned my WiFi off at night or during the 10 hours during the day while I'm at work, never saw any drop off in battery, either. Leave the house with 100% in the morning, come home at night with 100% waiting for me, along with some unchecked daily emails and calendar notifications...

I do turn the volume down at night so those nocturnal emails won't wake me up though while the iPad is "sleeping" and so am I, but when I see those emails in the morning it's nice to know that the iPad was still "on the clock" all night, so to speak!

Sleep v. Off

You can sleep = one touch to the off button.
You can turn it off = push and hold the off button.

If you have services on, Location, WIFI etc, in sleep mode I think it may drain.

Call support and ask them.

Mine's receiving mails and other push notifications while in sleep mode, so this would explain the battery drain, but on the other hand I found an actual playing with mine. ...;)

I shall try that - I found Bluetooth was on as well as WiFi (not that I can think of a good reason I turned Bluetooth on as it's err kinda useless). I'll also let the thing run down to flat and charge it up from there, it came 97% charged in the box and hasn't had a full cycle yet.

Not sure I have an opinion about whether WiFi should be automatically turned off whilst the thing is sleeping, it could go get mail when I wake it back up again, if the pad is asleep I'm clearly not looking at it and getting mail is a quick process, but I can see other reasons for keeping it on.

The bluetooth drains the battery really fast. That's probably what's doing it.

wifi or running apps doesnt turn off on pressing sleep button

i am 100% sure that wifi or running apps doesnt turn off on pressing sleep button.
proof: i had ichm running on the ipad with the upload chm files page enabled in it. i pressed the sleep button. later tried uploading files to ipad over wifi using the web interface of ichm. the file appeared transferred without an error.
late when i swithched the phone back from sleep ichm app was running and i could open the transferred file.
also apps from appstore install in sleep mode after initiating download.

but all this could be a blessing in disguise!
