I recently bought a fairly well rated LG Ultrafine 4k monitor and I am not really pleased with both the display as well as the performance of the MBP.

I was expecting a crystal clear image and great performance, what I got was a throwback to early/mid 2000s when I got my first flat screen TFT monitor.

Display:
The colors seem off, the PPI is fine but not great and the build quality is mediocre. Obviously has to be taken with some salt as it comes from someone who just bought his first non-Apple PC equipment in over 10 years.

Macbook:
But the biggest disappointment is the MBP. I basically cannot use 'retina mode' on any resolution and have to switch to low res. On 2560x1440 high res is bearable, everything above makes animations unbearably sluggish.

How to your MBP's fare with 4k displays? Same issues?

Are you using DisplayPort or HDMI? If DP, make sure you turn in DP 1.2 in the monitor's settings. If HDMI, make sure you are using an adapter AND cable that supports HDMI 2.0+ and 4k 60hz.
