I just recently bought a 5.5 gen 80 GB iPod. I use to have a first gen ipod video and it use to lag as well. I figured apple would of fixed this already, but I guess not. I read somewhere that deleting and then putting back the album art helps, but no dice here. Does it happen to you?

Same thing here. Original 5G iPod, latest firmware. Restore and album art re-optimization did nothing. Looked everywhere for a fix, have never been able to find one. Seems everyone is content with saying "well I guess that's just the way it goes."
My 30GB lags a bit lately, but I suspect its because its almost completely filled up (with music and videos).
of course its gonna lag in that respect while playing audio and scrolling.. the processor isnt that powerful.

I highly disagree with that statement. "Of course it's gonna lag in that respect"? Says who? Why should it lag at all? I've owned 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation iPods, and they were all smooth as butter no matter what you did with them. So why, then, should I expect it from the latest and greatest iPod? You're saying the processors in *those* iPods were more powerful?
I've determined that it's not a question of album art, space filled, or what you have on it, but is a flaw in the device itself. I have loaded exactly one single song on to my iPod (no videos/podcasts/pictures/contacts/games or ANYTHING, just the ONE song) with the album art disabled, and it's still choppy. Can we live with it? Obviously we do, it's just very annoying and frankly I expect better.
There's always one post in these threads about this issue where someone says basically what you did - "well, what do you expect?" I expect an iPod that works at least as well if not better than it's predecessors. Unfortunately, I've never heard anyone able to describe a fix for this problem. And, like all threads I've seen on the subject, I'm expect this one will end in exactly the same way.
I get tremendous lag on my 5G if I scroll through the songs and then hit play. If I select a playlist, things are somewhat better. I'm not impressed. That would be my only real problem with the player.
Mine lags too, but usually it's not too bad. Sometimes if I click Menu a lot in sequence it will really pause for a bit. It's not that the processors were more powerful in the older iPods, but that these ones have a much higher resolution display and have to do color.
if you think about it, apple wants to make the ipod as cheaply as they can. they want it to be a good quality product tho, which it is. i actually think the performance of it is really excellent. so what if it lags a little bit?? it is only running of a 33mhz processor, with some ridiculously low RAM!!
when scrolling through songs i only get lag after the first time, then it gets smoother. i dont have any issues with it lagging for the first few seconds and then performing quite well.
how do you expect we fix the problem?? are you an expert in writing the code for the ipod. im sorry but if apple has it all 'choppy' IYHO then maybe go with a nano, install linux on it and watch movies that way. i seriously dont find the ipod that laggy, maybe ive just grow used to it, or never recognised it.
umm no, the 5 & 5.5Gens both have 2 processors both running at 80MHz
the 30GB version sports 32MB of ram
and the 80GB version sports 64MB of ram

When I had my 60gb ipod in format FAT32, it sucked. It was as slow as a turtle. Then I reformatted it to HFS+ and it's been working flawlessly. Did anyone experienced this?
naw lagged when formated for windows and when it was formated with HFS+, kinda makes me miss my nano sometimes...
Mine lags a bit too, but removing, and then re-adding the album artwork makes it better for a month or two. (Well it did for me anyway.) Also, I did notice an improvement after each time I had to restore the iPod as well.

my 30gb has maybe 17gb free and it lags like hell! Especially if I select a song and try to go back to the menu to select the upcoming song. It will freeze with 2 frames side by side. On one side it will be the song playing and on the other the menu will show up. It's so annoying! You would think apple could do better...
Reset the Ipod, to reduce lag

To begin with it was relatively lag free, but over time it began to lag like hell, to the point where I was seriously considering smashing the thing.
However, I found that if you reset the iPod (slide the 'hold' button on then off, and hold down the 'menu' and 'centre' button at the same time, until the
appears on screen) when it reboots it is back to a pretty much lag free state
