I own the original iPad Air and unfortunately excluded from the Split view generation. Thanks, Apple... However, I plan on buying an iPad Pro once it's available at the stores. My plan is to take advantage of iOS 11 to multitask and have YouTube play in split view/slide over while browsing the web or paint in Procreate. If I'm active on another app like Procreate will YouTube stop play the video I'm currently watching? This question is both for the split view and slide over.

I don’t think YouTube ever allowed for PIP video with their app. However there is an app called Pipifier I believe that will allow you so open YouTube in Safari tabs and then activate the PIP feature of the video allowing you to work and watch at the same time.

I don't mean Picture-in-picture mode. I just want to have the YouTube app open in split view/Slide View and continue to play the video inside the app, while I'm active on another app such as Procreate that takes up the rest of the screen. Never heard of Pipifier, I'm gonna download it right now on my Air! You just made my day. Too bad that YouTube is slower in browsers though.

Not sure it’ll help you out on the air. I think it’ll only work on models that support the Split/SidebySide/PIP.

Yeah, 9.7 Pro on the latest PB, 4 I believe.

Does YouTube continue to play a video in slide over and split view (not pip) while you're active on another app in the background?

By the way the app pipifier works on my air :)

You now need to pay for Youtube Red. I use ProTube instead.
protube cost money too though? I've heard its slow and often stops working for days :(

Looks like it’ll work as long as both apps are supported.

I find that protube tends to offer way better performance than the stock youtube app. It's just a few dollars, far less than one month of youtube red. Once in a while, you might get some weird bug when compatibility breaks with the stock youtube service, but the developer is usually quite responsive in patching them.

I know the OP doesn’t want pip but another option to get YouTube videos to play in PIP without any apps...

If you go to YouTube and press the vertical ... button top right corner and select “desktop” the videos will now show the Apple Video player UI including PIP.

Note it does not work using the “request desktop website” function through Safari.

Oh, thats awesome. Does it also work in slide over? I've heard that it stops playing when it's in slide if you're being active in the background app...

Is it a 1 time pay or monthly? Also, in europe nothing is just a few dollars. It cost 7 dollars here.
But some user above said that it does not support split view or slide over?

I have just tested it on iPad Air 2 and it works fine in both slide over and split screen modes (any ratio). I was watching the Matrix kung-fu scene while typing this up, no worries at all. ;)

To answer your question the YouTube app does continue to play in split view and slide over view. It appears many people didn’t understand your question and were way off target.

Here’s ProTube running in split screen and PIP mode.

Ive just tested Royksopp lovely video whilst reading bbc news via split screen multitask.

Does that mean the answer to your question is a resounding No!
