Okay, I have an ibook g4, Os X 10.4

and for some reason, when I try to download certain applications, it just doesnt recognise them. The little icon beside the download is blank, and it says there is no default application to open it.

This has happened when I have tried to download several audio files that my friends have sent me, and also when I tried to download windows media player for macs.

What am I doing wrong? Please help!

For the Windows Media Player problem, you are probably missing Stuffit Expander.

Do get Expander, because you will need it now and then, but instead of WMP you may prefer Flip4Mac (Microsoft are also recommending it now, their own player for Mac is discontinued).

Hopefully your problem audio files are Windows Media, and installing this will take care of the other unrecognized files.

To start with, the most likely explanation for the problem with Windows Media Player is that you need Stuffit Expander (free -- here). It supports a number of compression formats, similar to .zip, including a couple that are sort of legacy formats that you see occasionally, which were much more popular in the OS ?9 days.

As for the audio files...who sent you them and how? It seems unlikely anyone would actually be making a .sit file or one of the others that Stuffit does anymore. So you might have a separate issue there.

Thank you, thats a lot of help! I'll get stuffit asap...

I think maybe the files were just non-mac compatible for some reason, my friends a whizz with her mac and she couldnt hear the files so...
