I got a dvd drive for my pc, and when I put a dvd in it, the stupid thing doesn't know what to do with it. Isn't there a dvd player that comes standard in windows? I should set fire to this sack of crap already. My imac would never do this to me.

i was under the impression, though an old impression that is, the windows media player has the capability to view dvd's, it however needs a plugin, that you get from microsoft, and pay for. vague i know, but as far as i'm aware, there is no dvd-video player included with windows.

If Microsoft included a DVD codec they would have to pay, then that charge would be passed on to the consumer. With an 85% profit margin on Windows, you'd think they would eat the cost. Anywho, most drives come with an OEM release of a player. If you want to play them in Mediaplayer, you can get a plug-in from Cyberlink (PowerDVD) for about $10. Intervideo also sells a power-pack.

My mom's Dell came with 3 different DVD players loaded into Windows.

Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Multimedia->DVD Player.

If it's not there, look on the Windows CD-ROM. Also, run Windows Update, and one should pop-up.

Of course all of that depends on the version of Windows, so would you mind telling us what exactly u are running?

So, your $200 - $300 OS doesn't even come with a "$10" codec. Good job, MS.

Yep, my copy of XP Pro couldn't play DVDs in anything unless I installed a 3rd party plugin.

Sad really.

That software is included by Dell. It is third party software. Unless he purchased a PC with that same software bundle it won't be there.

Windows Update will show you the current version of Mediaplayer you can upgrade too, but media player does not include a DVD codec. You must purchase a codec or third party DVD player. NVidia has also relases NVDVD, but it also is not free.

No probelem. XP Home.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. :)

It's on a Dell Inspirion notebook with DVD-ROM.

[EDIT] Prior to purchasing my iBook, I had a Compaq Presario with CD-RW drive running Windows 98. Under the Accessories folder, a DVD player was included and I didn't even have a DVD drive! Why did Windows stop including a DVD player? [/EDIT]

[EDIT #2] I just asked my neighbor to check the PC he built running windows XP Home, and he said that the DVD player he uses with his drive WAS included with Windows. [/EDIT #2]

Sorry, you missunderstod me, I meant that all you had said was only relevent if jethroted had an up to date OS, so I was saying we still need to know what they have. :)

The IBM mini-tower I had (Windows 2000) played DVDs, but the software was provided by IBM, not windows. Does not surprise me one bit the between MS and Dell they both cheaped out and didn't provide the required software. They'd charge you extra for the power plug if they could.

Well it's windows ME. But This is totally stupid. They don't even include a stupid dvd codec? I hate M$. They are such a waste of time.

windows doesn't include a dvd player, when I had to rebuild my computer from scratch (losing all the hp programs that came with) i lost my dvd player too. I had to get a stupid program that I had to pay for. I understand your pain. Microsoft needs to stop being so cheap and include a cheap dvd player that will at least play dvds.

It's not even a matter of being cheap. It's a matter of making an os that can perform basic tasks.
