So I'm going to do a fresh install of Windows XP on my gf's Sony Vaio. Only problem is that she doesn't have a restore disk, but does have a generic (not specifically for the Vaio) Windows XP install CD. I'm wondering how I should go about installing drivers. I went to Sony's site to see what I needed to download in order to install the correct drivers and I get this huge list. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNN220EB

Do I have to pick and choose the correct drivers (dvd drive, wifi, etc) or is there a more automatic way to do it?

Install Windows, run Windows update, whichever drivers WU doesn't sort manually download them from the part manufacturer / Sony support site.

A question like this does not belong on these forums though, I only answered because I'm a vaguely nice person.

But don't ask stupid questions about PCs on a mac forum again.

Might want to go ahead and grab the motherboard, network, wireless LAN and video drivers.

More importantly, if the Sony has a SATA hard drive, you must slipstream those drivers into the XP install disc (use Nlite for this). Otherwise you'll get an error message about XP not being able to find the hard drive since XP SP2 doesn't have SATA drivers.

Sony VAIO's have drivers and model downloads on their support site or request one from the customer support.

however the best place to ask a question of this nature may be at http://www.ocforums.com , they can assist with any sort of PC/Windows based questions for non-macs mainly.

there is a good mac community there, however like this place is specific to its users.

goodluck.
