Doing anything other than watching the videos I buy from iTunes

Okay, so, I love Surface. I've bought the episodes available. I've watched them. Love them to death.

But now what?

I'm stingy when it comes to hard drive space. Is there anyway I can burn these video files to, say, a DVD? It wouldn't bother me if I couldn't watch the files on a DVD player - I just want the data stored on something other than my internal hard drive.

What can you do with a .m4a file anyways? :-/

I would have thought you could burn them to data disks (CD or DVD) but I haven't got any to test with.

Could you, though? iTunes seems pretty protective of its songs - I'd think its protected file types would be even more protective of the shows NBC sells via iTunes.

I don't want to use up 75% of my hard drive to store shows. :-/

yes, you should be able to burn the shows to a data cd/dvd without a problem, its one of the best and easiest ways to back up your purchased music. even though it is a protected format you will be able to back it up. just put them in a playlist in itunes, open up the preferences, make sure its set to burn data cds, and burn away. you will have to use an computer that is authorized for your account to play them back again though.

I wouldn't be surprised if iTunes can play them back directly from the CD. I haven't tried it with video, but it seems like I've done it with music purchased from iTMS.

EDIT: Just tried it by burning a data disk from a playlist with videos in iTunes. I'm playing a video from the CD right now. The CD showed up in the source list in iTunes, and it shows all the videos on the disk when you click on it. They play just fine.

does this also apply to movies that you buy on the ITMS?

also, a data disk? how do you do that AND get it to show up in iTunes rather than on the desktop....

The videos I burned and tried this with were all ones that I bought on iTMS (don't have any non-purchased videos in my library). To burn a data disk, go to Preferences->Advanced->Burning and check "data disk". The disk should just show up in iTunes and the desktop when you insert it. At least it did that for me...
