Purchased a BTO 21" back in mid-August and was unhappy with yellow tint. Spent hours on phone, FedEx, etc to have a replacement one sent and it too has enough yellow to be a problem. Went 21" since we thought room would be an issue - have already adapted to 21" np, so willing to check out 27" again.

Made a shopping appt at local :apple: retail store this morning, before store officially opens. Hope to be able to purchase something, review in-store, and solve this once and for all. Will post the result this evening...

Cheers!

Wow, now THIS is the experience I had hoped to have!

Personal shopping appt was 1hr before store opened. Spoke with my sales guy about my experiences and proceeded to get the 27" i5 quad. While Apple's policy is only 1 system (desktop?) purchase per year for individual academic purchases, they agreed to give me the $100 academic discount with the understanding that the other machine is going back. Unboxed the machine and listened for any offending sounds as best as I could. Using their wifi, browsed to a site for some dead pixel testing and did lots of looking for yellow.

Results? No HD (seagate) nor brightness noise and screen is glorious. I'll give it a few days just to confirm my initial thoughts, but damn, this is a world of difference. If you think if you want a 21, do as everyone told me to do: just go 27.

Next goal is to get other iMac returned with no restocking issues (shouldn't be a problem with proof of this 27" purchase) and to see what we can do about that iPod that came with the back to school promo. Retail guy was saying that Apple should 'make it right'. We shall see.

Cheers!
