I'm probably getting a MacBook Pro M4 Pro this week. Nearly all of my external storage is USB A, so I'll need to have adapters to be able to use any of it, but I am really confused about what kind of adapters I'll need. I'm not easily finding a simple answer specific to my needs here. Can I get a recommendation and/or simple explanation of what I need to look for? TIA

Most external storage has a removable cable, so what I've done is replace that cable. Often at the device end is "Micro USB 3.0" but sometimes it's "USB A 3.0" or occasionally even a SATA connector. In any event, a "USB-C" to whichever of those (in whatever length works best for you) is better than any adapter, IMO.

I have (and get from clients) a LOT of thumb drives, so would also need something for those.

just a basic USB-C to USB-A adapter will take care of thumb drives. I bought a kit at Amazon with 3 or 4 of them for just a handful of dollars.

on the land line mr. smith.
So many options...look at what else would be useful beyond USB A. HDMI, SD card, ethernet, etc.

For just couple extra bucks you can have every needed port at your fingertips. A good basic dock has most of the common options. Need more? Get more ports.

Another option for a home office setup would be a USB C monitor with a built-in USB A hub.
