Hi, Just wanted to get some advice.

I'm finally due to buy my first iPhone (for Christmas) and now note in the last week or two that the buyers guide has gone from 'only buy if you need it' to 'don't buy, updates soon'.

Now from what I've read on the guide there are no rumors to suggest there will be a new iPhone until June. To me that's some time away so I'd like to get peoples opinions as to if 6 months is the general definition of 'soon' or if there is a strong sign it may be earlier than June that I may of missed (quite likely, I miss a lot).

If by June, that means soon I'll buy one (I have a very strong urge to get one in December!) but if a new iPhone comes out before Christmas or in January after I've brought one I'll probably be quite remorseful which is not a state a new iPhone user should be in (I tend to stick with what I've brought for years so getting the latest model is important).

Anyway I'm rambling but I think a discussion on the buyers guide recommendation time frame may be worthwhile, 'SOON' what does it mean!
it's probably been done before mind, if so my apologies!

Thanks for your help
Regards
Bill

As the above poster has mentioned, the timeframe which Apple uses to update the iPhone is usually in June-July. Till then, there are no new iPhones released midway through the cycle.

I agree with the above poster, and the only thing I can think of is that that there may be a software update coming soon. Even that though is completely speculative since there hasn't been any mention beta test versions out.

The Buyers Guide uses an automatic calculation to display those messages. It's being thrown off by the one out-of-cycle update for the 1st generation iPhone. This is very unlikely to be repeated...

Exactly. . . The 16GB 1st generation iPhone was the spoiler . . . It being the only "iPhone" to be updated in December.

There will be a new one in June/July just like there has been the last three years.

On top of what all of the above posters mentioned, Apple has already stated no more products this year.

You're safe for another six months. The only time the iPhone has broken the summer product cycle has been for the 16GB version released in January 2008. Well, that and the initial price cut. But since that 16GB release, it's been a summer release for new hardware. Plus, don't expect much new hardware. There won't be a 4G iPhone until at least 2011 because even Sprint barely has any 4G coverage.

Everyone pretty much covered it. I'll just add that I would wait if I were you. In July you can pick up an iPhone with a dual core processor. Ok there's my update rumor for you.

new iphone only comes out once per year. maybe a iphone is coming to verizon. but no new model. once a year iphone gets an update.

No way. I seriously doubt they'll change the internals significantly this round. Consider that they did not redesign the hardware through several generations of 2G and 3G phones. There's really no reason to change the processor when the 3GS performs so well.

I just bought 16GB 3GS on Tuesday. I was scared about rumored update too but I doubt it's coming before June so that's too long time to wait and here in Finland I would've gotten it in October/November anyway because it takes so long time to arrive here.

That's actually also a good argument for doing sometiing significant with the processor. Plus the multi-core mobile chip announcements are a little foreshadowing. And the iPhone will have more competiton this next cycle when the pre and droid get ready for their second generations.

There won't be a new iphone by christmas, maybe they will knock down the price temp for the holiday but i don't know. That's why I don't think it's a big deal to wait it out if you really want to but then you will be more patient than me. I don't know whats in store for june maybe internals upgrade maybe external who knows.

My 3G contract is up on 10th January and even I'm waiting till June/July for the next iPhone.

As much as I'd like a 32GB iPhone, the 3GS doesn't offer much else over my 3G, so in my view, its worth waiting for the next version. Even if it doesn't have any major improvements, I'd rather not chance it with sticking to a 3GS for 18 months

There is no chance for an iPhone before the new year.
There is little reason to suspect that there would be any sorta thing before June.

This issue has been discussed before, it's just a computer calculation. I understand the reason for not human overriding, i.e. keeping the consistency and independence of the guide.

OK Thanks

Thanks all!

It will be interesting to see if the Buyer's Guide does stay on 'Don't Buy' for 6 months or if Apple releases a new iPhone earlier than we all think they will.

As for myself, after re-evaluateing my iPhone 'need' versus 'want', in conjunction with the benefits of 'wait?' (6 months - new apple iPhone after a years development/refinement is likely to be more than a bit better than the 3GS).
I think I'd better get one! Life's just too short to wait around. (especially if you are using the Samsung SGHE250V).

The 3GS is a terrific iteration of the iPhones. I can't see any reason you wouldn't be a happy owner for years.
