Ok, so I'm venturing into getting my first ipod. My husband and I were at the Apple store the other day looking at imacs...now he wants and ipod and I do too. We will each have our own ipods. A nano is perfectly fine for my husband... but not sure for me. I have quite an extensive CD collection but am I really going to put every single song on my ipod? I like the size of the nano....and that it's a flash drive but I like the fact that I could store whatever I wanted on the classic and not worry about it... Any ideas or suggestions to help me decide. I know this has been discussed before and I read those threads... but I'd like to know what you all think for me. Thanks!

Hi,

I recently went through the exact same thing, in the end storage was the most important thing for me, so I've got a 120GB classic, I've then spent many happy evenings ripping my CDs into it. I'm loving the genius function that's bringing up long forgotten tunes from my collection that would usually be sat on a shelf being unplayed for months, even years. It's great that I'll eventually have nearly every bit of music I own on the IPod...so the classic was the only option for me.

My wife on the other hand doesn't have as many CDs (after 10 years living together and 5 years of marriage we still have seperate CD collections) so she's got the nano (the most difficult decision was the colour!)

Happy shopping,

Col

Thanks Col. I probably have about 500 CDs but that doesn't mean I'm going to put every single song on the ipod... arrggghhhh....oh, what am I going to do... That's funny though because my husband and I have seperate CD collections as well....he probably has 30 - 50 CDs so I'm going to get him the $149 nano - that should sufficient for him....I should hope. I'm in a quandry...shouldn't be this difficult.

If you plan to use it for exercise (running, etc), get the nano. If you can deal with the larger size, get the classic. They are both brilliant players.

I have a 30gb Video and the thought of having to actually PICK which songs to put on it is one of the things making me hesitant about going to a iPod Touch. 3500 songs - they are just there, in neat little playlists... DH has a 1gb Nano and while the size is perfect for what he wants to carry around - picking the playlists to fit drives me bonkers.

Well recently I sold my 80GB iPod classic to get a new iPod.
I chose a 16GB iPod touch over a 120GB iPod classic.
I too thought I could just individually pick songs I liked best.
That did not work for me, I started freaking out without having my 12,662 songs with me.

I like my music, I have an extensive music collection, and I travel a lot, so the classic is a must for me, and one I'd recomend for someone with an extensive music collection. For exercise, or style, or a smaller collection, the new nano is an incredibly stylish, and attractive iPod. Then again, there are people with more than one iPod....

Cheers and good luck

Before my first iPod (about five years ago) I used a small flash-based MP3 player. Whenever I got tired of listening to the songs on it, I had to connect it to the computer, delete the songs from it, copy new songs to it, etc. I know that doesn't really sound like much, but I was doing it pretty frequently and it was more of a PITA than it should have been. I bought a 20 Gb iPod and put all of my music on it.

That old 3G iPod's battery isn't what it used to be, so I have it plugged into my car stereo now, and since my music collection has grown I now have the 120 Gb Classic.

For me, it was all about having all of my music with me, instead of frequent syncing to change songs and playlists.

Ok - another issue to throw into the mix.... I was set on the classic....til I started reading that you shouldn't jostle it too much or exercise with it... I'm not into running...I'd like to get into it but I'm not at this point in time. However, I am into walking....slightly fast :) and working out on an exercise bike. Will getting the classic be an issue? Do they offer an extended warranty for it?

I always walked and biked with mine.
And yes, there is a 3-year extended warranty you cab get.
It's $60, I believe.
I would post a link but I'm on my iPod right now.

To me, it comes down to if you want everything you own on there, or if you want to pick what you put on there.

Personally, I want everything on own on there, so I have a 160GB classic with every song and music DVD I own on it. And I have the cable that pugs it into my TV and stereo always hooked up, so I can enjoy anything on it on my main entertainment system. It is kinda like a lo-fi version of an AppleTV.

I also have a 8GB iPhone that has no iPod content other than podcasts. The classic is my music device.

And exercise is not a problem with the classic except the size can be a bit cumbersome. Walking and riding an exercise bike will be no issue with any iPod you get.

they say that you shouldn't, and it is true that the nano, with its nike + etc is better for that function, however it is not like you couldn't be energetic with the classic. After all, the ipod mini, with its hard drive, was the first ipod for which the running armbands came out for.

If I were you, i'd get the classic, and when you start running, pick up a refurb shuffle, as nothing beats them for 'energetic' use.

Thanks all. I went ahead and got the classic because I really want to store all my tunes on it. And if I get into some real exercise stuff I can just get a cheap shuffle with some different tunes on it. Thanks for all the ideas - it all proved helpful!

In your case, the Classic most definitely. The touch is awesome, but obviously won't be enough storage for your music. Always get more storage than you think you'll want/need/use. ;)

Nope problem.
Congradulations on you're purchase!:D

Nano, You Don't Need To Have All Your Music All The Time. Do You Carry All Your Purses Or All Yor Shoes With You All The Time? Would You If You Could?

I TYPED IN ALL CAPS FOR, YELLING EFFECT BUT, MR EDITED IT. APPARENTLY, YOU CAN'T YELL IN MR EVEN IF YOU WANT TO!...I stand corrected.

Congrats on your purchase and well done; may you long enjoy it. And yes, you can always add a shuffle should you feel the need to start exercising.

To iVeBeenDrinkin', I'd suggest that shoes and purses are a rather different category of ownership and enjoyment than music; of course people do not always carry all of their clothing/possessions with them; they don't need to. But music is different.

Before iPods were invented, this need did not arise - though I personally regretted it, and deeply disliked having to ferry a dozen or so favourite CDs up and down the country with me on my travels as musical company. I equaly disliked having to permanently feed the discman with batteries - it positively ate them. The invention of the iPod has allowed for the mass portable enjoyment of musical collections in a commuting lifestyle. To my mind, it is one of the most useful - and life-enhancing - inventions of the past quarter of a century.

Cheers and good luck

Oh, you definitely have a point. However, it is like the CD case in my car that holds ten....but then the car is loaded with probably 50 CDs plus the holder I have of even more CDS....I guess I like the option. Because even with all the CDs I have with me - the one I always want isn't...

Oh - one more thing... I only have one purse believe it or not and just a handful of shoes ;) and I wouldn't think of carrying an extra pair with me unless they were sneakers!
