Turns out those blood-thirsty demons just won't stay dead. Id Software has announced that Doom 4 has begun production as of today. According to the press release, the studio is now hiring for the project. Said CEO Todd Hollenshead, "Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth."

And no other details yet.

I await.

That's cool. Doom 3 isn't pretty unoriginal in game play, but I do like the creatures/atmosphere. And I do like the look of iD's upcoming engine!

As a lifelong Doom fan I'm psyched, but some bits of Doom3 pissed me off.

Like theres no duct tape on Mars? Maybe some velcro?

BTW, that screen was good. :D

I actually thought the necessity to swap between the flashlight and your weapon added tension and excitement to the game but once again I'm in a very small minority of people who think that was a good gameplay design choice.

I wonder what will come out first, RAGE or Doom 4?

Doom 3 was a real let down. To me the Doom franchise was never a creeping round corners kind of game, it was a run into a big open space and find yourself facing twenty imps and a cyberdemon kind of game. Quake 4 was a *lot* better though and in many ways was what I was expecting from Doom 3.

doom 3 was pretty much crap. All it had was good graphics. The AI was very stupid and they relayed on lame tricks to make it difficult and to scare some one.

Doom 3 was good / great for the first hour or so. After that it was nothing but repetitious garbage. Same identikit corridor, same dark area, same zombies walking at you over and over and over again. ad nauseum.

Scary games are about being unpredictable shocks, how one earth was Doom 3 scary when it was the same thing repeated over and over.

Also the Doom3/Quake 4 engines whilst initially impressive have soon lost their sheen. Hell you can tell this by how few games by third parties favored ID's engine over Unreal Engine 3.

So what to expect from doom 4 ? More ceramwraped / shiny monsters no doubt.

Plastic wrap with more brown and bloom, of course!

But I can't wait to see what they pull out of this. I remember seeing the first Doom 3 video all them years ago and thinking that it looked real, but plastercine real. Which I wasn't bothered by, but then the final game took on a whole different look.

and to make it worse it was also quite performance hungry compared to others

(remember how carmack stated how the doom 3 engine would run great on the geforce 3 ti before it was released ? except not)

Ah but the Unreal 3 engine is very well optimised. It's a great engine with some good physics. Id tech 4 wasn't. It was bog standard with only megatextures as a trump card... Which was only really used for Quake Wars.

Ha ha

If there was duct tape you could make a weapon much like the one Ripely uses at the end of the film 'Aliens' then you would never need to change weapon!

This is really great news! I loved Doom 3 despite all the other bad reviews. Granted it could have been better, what can't.

The thing is, it's not like developer had a choice with UE3, the engine has only been around since 2006 and for consoles, idTech 4 goes way back to 2004 and it competed with Valve's Source engine not Unreal Engine 3 (which wasn't even available back then).

Not really an apples to apples comparison.

Maybe we'll get lucky and ID will bring doom 4 back to its roots with big maps, secret doors, tons of hidden items, etc.

Personally I'm hoping for a "Hell on Earth" sequel... With big maps and secrets.

Hell infecting Earth with a modern engine. That must be a fantastic design to play with.

I remember the good old days when we would spend most of our time walking through 2D maps, shooting 2D monsters with 2D guns, only to succumb to 2D thirst and 2D hunger. Thats when you find yourself biking to the nearest BK to buy 2 for 1 hamburgers only wishing you were eating it in 2D.

Just like I remember Wolfenstein 3D, followed by Spear of Destiny

But the launch of Doom was unbelievable. I have played the shareware version of Doom so many times, I could finish Episode 1 on "I am Death Incarnate" with my eyes closed!
I loved the sounds too...

Doom 2 was ok... but not such a gr8 sequel. Except for those hidden levels (one giving you the Wolfenstein 3D experience again: "SCHUTSTAFFEL") :D

Doom 3 was immense IMHO. Maybe I am more of a sucker for gr8 grfx and sound than actual gameplay, but I adored Doom 3.

I already know Doom 4 will be such a must have, that I will probably buy the hardware necessary to be able to play it @ max settings...

I'm not gonna let D3's bad vibe that it had upon me get in the way of looking forward to another Doom game. Fingers crossed!

Can't wait for Doom IV!

It's nice to see someone has the same opinion about Doom III. Only a few liked it. I really enjoyed that game.

And I totally agree on Doom I & II.

I can't wait for Doom IV!

So if it isn't unoriginal, then you're saying it IS original?
