The piece highlights the fact that the current average single web page is larger than the original DOS Doom install package!

There's no stopping this of course and although there are some partial solutions for older devices (intelligent proxies, text only browsers, No Script etc) I think a better solution would be an active modem/router that could deliver stripped down pages, or better, your ISP offering custom channels that offer full web or legacy compatible access.

I find javascript to be the biggest problem - unfortunately, a lot of sites break without it. That's why I'd envisage a router with a dedicated embedded CPU to strip/translate. As that wont happen commercially, I guess a custom proxy running on a PI would be close?

We're still stuck in the "OH MY GOD, THIS IS A WEBPAGE" phase of it all.

And to be serious, it took from 1878 until 1939 (The Wizard of Oz) before we got out of the "OH MY GOD, THIS IS A MOVIE" phase. So we might be in it for a long time.

I believe there is a application that you can install on a old computer that you can use as a proxy server that will convert almost all pages to a website based off of .gif files that almost any old browser can understand.

The problem with Readability is the page has to load first before it's reformatted unless I've missed something?
