An on rails Doom shooter (bye bye immersion and suspense) where my fingers will obscure the action?

No.

Anybody else having trouble downloading and installing this?

There can't be that many people downloading this. Well... maybe.

iTunes locks up.

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 32GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

As someone who can remember looking open mouthed in amazement when the very first Doom was released I feel incredibly disappointed that they've taken the on-rails approach to this.

The ironic thing is that Doom was a massive step up from wolfenstein when it was released but now, on the iPhone I feel the original Wolfenstein will be more immersive and better than the latest Doom. How's that for 15+ years of progress!

Sigh, I wish they would release "Lite" versions day-and-date with the full versions. Why spend $10 on something that might be crap?

So I just finished playing one level in Doom Resurection...and here are my inital thoughts. id decided to do an on-rails approach and they midly succeed. However, the suspense portion is a bit lost in the translation. I find it a bit disturbing as EA also seems taken by making onrails gaming on the iPhone/iPod touch platform (i.e. Need for Speed). The music and graphics are top notch (although some of the "still images" during "conversations" are very low quality). You will find yourself constantly recalibrating whenever you move your iPhone/iPod touch around. I find myself at times wishing an optional onscreen dpad was available. For 9.99 the game is worth the price of admission for FPS starved addicts. id and John Carmack are on the right path but, I am sure in due time they will work out the kinks in FPS gameplay on the iPhone/iPod touch platform. I give the game a B-.

Excited to see what John Carmack and team deliever with the three Quake games heading to the App store...hopefully a more refined gameplay

So far I'm very disappointed with the approach. I can't stand having the game control things for me ... so far. I'll keep trying though. It looks cool but ... it ends up just being a skeet shooting game.

This game is meh. If it was $2.99 it would be ok but definitely not worth $9.99.

I found the interview on the (excellent) TouchArcade site to be amusing. Apparently Id didn't figure out until halfway thru development that clicking on the screen would not be a fun game mechanic. Gee I could have told them that straight away. Then Carmack goes on to say how unless his game can sell at $10 the app store will suffer for lack of games from such 'qualified' devs as the ones that he's using. Pretty laughable when you see how mediocre the game actually is.

I'm actually liking it a lot. Let's all be honest here.. FPS games, for the most part, are pretty much unplayable on the iPhone because of junk controls (at least until these rumored gamepads come out). I'm much happier they took this approach. The game controls great and the frame rate never drops. The graphics are awesome too. My only gripes are the game is too short with hardly any replay value (should have unlockables or something for getting good scores on stages), and predictable AI. I think the game is awesome though!

Do you know what the actual original version of Wolfenstein was? Here is a hint.. it was on an Apple II, and was many, many years before the Doom predecessor. :)

Looked a little something like this:

Yeah, sorry - I meant Wolfenstein 3D :)

Well I'm going to play this game some more to give it another chance but right now I feel as if it was a waste of ten bucks.

UNLIKE Real Racing which was well worth the ten bucks.....therefore, making Doom Resurrection the center of a 'what are great games worth' argument (as id seems to be trying to do) seems pretty ridiculous to me...it's just not a great game.

People really want to like it, especially after plopping down 10 bucks, which is why I don't think there have been too many bad reviews yet. The backlash will grow over time IMO, if the price is not dropped.

Or maybe this is what people want out of handheld games? If so they can have it.

This sounds very disappointing, a rails Doom game just ruins the suspense, and terror of the original game (and Doom 3, which this kind of based on). I've been waiting for this since I saw the video, but I noticed no on screen controls on the video, which left me wondering. Now we know. Why didn't they just use the control scheme of Wolfenstein 3d (on iPhone and iPod touch) ? That was the best 1st person controls I've seen on the iPhone/iPod Touch yet. Dumb move on their part, though I probably will still get it (I'm a sucker for Doom games). I just hope they release Doom Classic using the Wolfenstein 3d control scheme, then I'd really be happy.

It's pretty much shovelware. I'm guessing they put the stupid cutscenes in there to make the game seem longer....because they serve no other purpose than to annoy and interrupt the flow of the game.

There are ways control could have been done to enable movement....but by putting this 'on rails' they eliminated so many variables for themselves that I'm sure they were able to shovel the game out in way less time...then we get to hear about their 'revolutionary' control mechanism and how they are such top class developers that we are lucky to get this gift from them, laughable. Seems to me like id has lost it.

I think it's the best looking title for the iPhone so far. It is on rails but it is quite a bit of fun. It's not just click a button to shoot. You move the targeting recticle, duck and cover, pick up items and new weapons, and reload.

I like it quite a bit! It is the most polished game I've played yet on the iPhone.

oh my god, they need to release that version of wolfenstein on the iphone. i loved that game. and now i feel old.

I got it the very first day without even knowing it was a shooter on rails(no I dont buy every game out there, but couldnt resist this one). The shooter on rails came as a pleasant surprise to me, and I found it much more usable than the on screen d-pad for Resident Evil. The game is really fun. Why some people will prefer a proper Free Looking 3D world over On Rails in iPhone is beyond me. Had the iPhone had real controls atleast like a PSP I could understand, but with no buttons and onscreen buttons as the only choice I`d rather take a game which is limited but atleast playable.
