20 years? Man, I remember when this game came out. I actually first saw it while at some guy's house with a friend and immediately went home to play it. Definitely the gateway for me and my desire to play FPS games over time.

Truly epic. Sure, Catacombs3D and Castle Wolfenstein 3D preceded it, and people look back on Wolfenstein fondly, but Doom was the first GAME. Everyone had it. Everyone played it. They gobbled up the sequels and the add-on packs and even modded it. And it's still very playable and fun today!

Definitely a great game; but I remember Marathon being released more or less at the same time with a LOT more quality and attention to detail.

IMHO, the Marathon series comprises the best games ever released on a Mac.

I was going to say, everyone had it, unless they had a Mac...I remember installing it (in DOS) on my sister's work laptop, as all I had was a PowerBook 5300. Ahhhh, good times...;)

But that didn't really matter, as the Marathon series had everything Doom had, but tons more of thought, puzzles, strategy, and a story to it. It was a pity that Bungie didn't get more notice for it, but with their quality and attention to detail, it was no surprise they got snatched up by Microsoft when they needed a premier developer for the XBox.

I still remember the shock all the Mac owners had when they heard Bungie had been bought up by Microsoft.

Hate to knit-pick but Marathon was pretty much 1 whole year later :D:p

Good point about Marathon. I missed out on that as I was rockin' Windows 95 at the time and knew nothing about Macs or the software on them. I played Marathon some (as Aleph One) in emulation, and thought it was pretty good. It is very obviously the ancestor of Halo.

Wrong. Doom was also released for Mac in 1994/95 (don't have the exact dates) - I remember playing it many times on my Quadra 605 back in the golden days.

Also wrong. Marathon was released in 1994 for Mac - Doom was released more or less at the same time (actually a little later if I remember well) for that platform...

Only God knows how many hours I've spent playing Marathon overnight during my Uni days...in any case, the best of the bunch (even though ALL three games were excellent) was Marathon 2: Durandal.

With its open-air environments, improved physics, new weapons and intelligent puzzles, it just blew Doom and everyone else out of the water back then. A truly classic game which more than deserves a modern re-release on the Mac.

Maybe not for Mac, but for the rest of the PC world, it was released 1993. Otherwise we'd be celebrating a 19th anniversary today would we not?

True. Marathon was a year later at the same time as doom 2 came out. However marathon seemed to be at least 2 or three years ahead of doom 2. Not only a proper story and all the terminals and stuff but marathon was actually proper 3d unlike doom 1/2. Although doom would show things as being 'above' or 'below' they weren't as in you couldn't look up or down and shooting at something above or below would automatically make it. Go up / down.

Mind you there were other games out before / around the same time as doom. Bungie had one or two games before marathon and there were others.

And as for the day Microsoft bought bungie...

Bungie were working on halo and ONI which were both going to change the mac gaming world. Then they were bought out. ONI was rushed out by take 2 and was ***** and halo launched the Xbox.

I felt dirty because I loved halo when it finally came out on mac

Well the release date info at Moby Games would appear to completely contradict what you remember. According to that page, Doom was released for PC in Dec 1993 (which we already knew) and was only released for the Mac in Dec 1995 as Ultimate Doom, which means that Doom was basically released for the Mac after Marathon had been.

Heck, by the time Ultimate Doom was released for the Mac, I had been playing Dark Forces on my PowerPC for several months...which again, would agree with my memory of playing Doom in DOS, and never on the Mac.

No worries! I see your user name is well deserved, though :D

Well, I've never cared for Windows versions of games - this is Mac Rumors after all. So all my references were to Mac-specific releases - and as said above, my point was to refer to the release of Doom and Marathon "more or less" at the same time...

Doom as a shareware version released a little later than the original Marathon, and Marathon 2 a little later than the official release of Doom 2 for the Mac.

By the way, Dark Forces was also an EXCELLENT game, in my opinion much better than Doom but still below Marathon in terms of overall polish and complexity.

wow - it's been that long :(

Remember it like it was yesterday. We thought Wolfenstein 3D was great and then this came OMG!

This game used to make almost pee myself playing at night in my apartment all alone! I laugh back on that now.

All I remember was that I was aching to try DOOM, but it just never seemed to arrive...

But then, yes, Marathon did (finally arrive) and then later so did Dark Forces, and by the time those both were out, it didn't matter that Doom (finally) made it to Mac...what we had was better!

Somewhere around that time also, was when X-Wing and Tie-Figher also came out for PC, and we had to wait (interminably, it seemed) for a release for the Mac. I know Mac developers aren't happy, but it is so much nicer to have Bootcamp nowadays...

It's been a couple of years since I last played Doom, but every time I do I tend to play through the whole thing and have great fun doing it.

roadbloc, I seem to recall that you had Doomguy as your avatar at one point :D

Literally spend hours playing the hell out of this game. Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake were my favourite games from that time!
