I'm running version 10.15.1 but did not get any updates for 10.15.2 released two days ago? Anyone else running Dosdude1 patch received their update?

Edit: Thanks to @cdf, I solved the problem with OpenCore, see below.

A non supported Mac can't update itself, you have to install 10.15.2 over your previous install using the dosdude1 patched installer for 10.15.2.

Go to this thread for help macOS 10.15 Catalina on Unsupported Macs.

I installed OpenCore, everything went really well. There is one small issue I have, I cannot go back to Mojave Startup Disk, it always boots on Catalina. I select the Mojave disk and shutdown the Mac, then I unplug it for 30sec and plug it back. Back to Catalina, instead of Mojave.

I apologize in advance if I ask the question here, but it might be easier to track the issues.

There is one small issue I have, I cannot go back to Mojave Startup Disk, it always boots on Catalina.

Booting other macOS disks through OpenCore (RequestBootVarRouting = true) can be tricky on the Mac Pro, but selecting the disk, shutting down, and doing an SMC reset (unplug, wait 15 seconds, plug back, wait 5 seconds, and then power on) has always worked in my case, and often it works without an SMC reset.

To begin troubleshooting, this is what I would do: Reset the NVRAM, so that your machine boots into Mojave (that system being on a SATA disk). At this point, repeat step 5 in the guide to confirm that you can boot into Mojave through OpenCore (make sure to select the disk in recovery, because of your Catalina disk). Then boot into Catalina and try going back to Mojave.

Of course, if you cannot get it to work, you can always just boot natively (see step 8 in the guide), and use OpenCore only for updates. When booted natively, you should have no problem booting into Mojave.

If you expect to receive automatic upgrade to 10.15.2 it is not gonna happen. You need the VMM flag in the CPU through OC bootloader. The patch itself should update automatically. If you want to upgrade through @dosdude1 patcher you need to redownload all from scratch and upgrade. Either directly or through the created USB installer.

For changing the boot order first you have to bless the opencore.efi (SIP disabled) and then select the startup disk normally.

Has anyone with a 5,1 dual socket Xeon had any success in upgrading to Catalina using opencore or Dosdude method? I tried it with OpenCore method yesterday and shouldn’t get my computer to boot anymore. Had to reformat the drive and reinstall Mojave.

I know that Mojave is still fine but for long term piece of mind for my machine, i’d eventually like to have a viable Catalina installation working on my machine.

Yes. With OpenCore, I installed Catalina on my dual-processor machine and updated to 10.15.1 and 10.15.2 (via Software Update).

That is what I did, it would not reboot into Mojave. I tried all possible and impossible ways to resurrect it, I ended-up removing the Catalina PCIE 3.0 ssd, deleted its contents and redid the install. Now everything is working properly. :)

Ideally, I would like to use Mojave on an external solid state drive that I plug it through a Sonnet Allegro USB3C-2PM-E. So when the drive is plugged, it should boot automatically into Mojave. What do you recommend me to do?

I want to keep both OC and VMM flag enabled so I get updates automatically, how big is the performance impact?

@dosdude1 Hi I installed macOS Catalina 10.15.2 on an iMac 8.1 (previously there was macOS Mojave installed with your patch and everything worked fine). The hard disk is an HFS + disk that is formatted APFS during installation. The Mac works sometimes. In several cases at startup it is blocac and starts again in loop with kernel panic infinity. I make him boot with the pendrive and reinstall the patch. He restarts normally but then at the next reboot he is again in loop. All this is frustrating! How can I do? Will it do so even if I replace the hard drive with an SSD? Thanks for the reply. Max

I've opted for Catalina on a PCIe drive and Mojave on a standard SATA SSD. With the SSD in Bay 1, the machine boots automatically into Mojave after resetting the NVRAM.

Less than 5% I believe. Interestingly, when using SMBIOS spoofing with OC, the situation is reversed: the flag can prevent a (40%!) loss of performance.

My experience: I’m running MacOS Catalina 10.15.2 now on a PCIe SSD drive (512Gb EVO Samsung 970) and have kept the Mojave (latest version) on a SATA SSD drive (Bay 1). Both work just fine and I’m able to switch between the two without any problems.

Background: I installed successfully Catalina 10.15 on a clean 512Gb EVO Samsung PCIe SSD drive a few weeks back with the DOSdude1 method on my Mac Pro 5,1 from 2009 (upgraded in steps throughout the years to 2x 6-core Xeon 3,46 GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (Metal support), BootROM 141.0.0.0.0 (upgraded in steps too through the great help from people on this forum!).
For awhile I didn’t know how to upgrade from 10.15.0 to 10.15.x but yesterday it dawned on me to check out this forum and also the comments under DOSdude1 own YouTube video section. I followed the advice to do the upgrade through repeating the DOSdude1 installation process by way of running the latest patch and downloading the whole 8,6Gb 10.15.2 installer through the patch, installing it on a USB stick and then do a normal install from the USB stick on to my 10.15.0 start disk. It worked perfect! Notice: I went straight from 10.15.0 to 10.15.2 without a hick-up! And re-booting over to my Mojave drive works likewise as it should. (I‘m still using a couple of 32bit applications (Adobe Muse & Chronosync).

Hi guys, I need some advice please before I go ahead and install Catalina on my 2009 Mac pro.

I currently have a heap of applications on my Boot Drive, which I don't really fancy reinstalling. Is there a way of installing dosdude's Catalina without losing the applications on my Mac?

If you have already installed an SSD hard disk (therefore with verbose boot), installing catalina will not be a problem (as long as the apps are all 64 bit), but I think you know this. If, on the other hand, you still have a 3.5 hard disk of mechanical ones, then it is more complex. The installer will write the old disk in HFS + in AFPS mode but (at least on my imac 8.1) this gives problems in EFI boot and other bad stories. In my opinion if you change HDD you will not have problems (I did it on macbook 5.1 and everything went smoothly) ....

Thanks mate. Alas, I'm not too clued about drives etc so have no idea what kind of drive I have, other than the fact it definitely is not an SSD.

My Mac model is Mac Pro 4,1.

The HD is a "Device Name: Hitachi HDE721064SLA360"

Where does this leave me?

Where? At the beginning of the path that will take you to replace your HITACHI with a new SSD, but first make a backup of Time Machine for the transfer of apps and documents ... Installing Catalina on that Hitachi is a risk! ;-P

Thanks mate. I'll look in to SSD's this weekend. In the mean time, the back up process continues.

My 5,1 with dual core has an EFI flashed Metal capable Radeon and an upgraded WiFi BLE card. I use the "boot-args "-no_compat_check"" option and the DosDude patched installer with SIP turned off. The patch is set to no patch and Disable APFS booster, I only use it to override the installer block. After installation and patching the whitelist to allow Continuity with the updated BLE card (including Watch Unlock) I can run with SIP enabled. I also use an NVME card since I updated the firmware with the Mojave installer. It's been as stable as Mojave.

After noticing my Mac Book Pro updating (up to 10.5.5 Supplemental) and my Mac Pro 5,1 staying on 10.5.1 I decided to search and found this post. So here is my question....

I read about OpenCore and seems great, but.... I have 1 partition with macOS Catalina 10.5.1 and Radeon RX580 so I always boot into a black screen until the OS comes up... So how do I install OpenCore? Do I need to install my old video card?

Hats off to y’all running Catalina, I for one did not care for it, sleep issues, never could get Apple Watch unlock to work, or even to recover from sleep mode. Had to reboot.

All things that work in Mojave and high Serra, I deleted Catalina today, and installed windows 10 on that drive.

May revisit this someday, if things get better.

There’s an entire Wiki thread dedicated to OpenCore and a thread for the patcher. Try there.
