I think you mean a tag. Just right-click on it > "Get Info" or "Tags..." to see which tags are assigned to it.

To clarify, are you talking about the Applications folder in Finder or Launchpad? If you mean a blue dot like this, it appears if the application is new or recently updated, and it will disappear when you open it:

If you mean the Applications folder in Finder, it's likely a Tag as mentioned above. You can right-click and remove the Tag.

It was in Applications folder, but was old software still seemed to work but I uninstalled in as was nothing important. Do not know why it would be tanned although it was launched at startup. Thanks guys

it's a tag... you control click on a file or folder, pick a color tag, and you get a dot next to the app (it used to be the whole text got a color; no longer). either that, or it's a measle...in which case...be careful! :D
