This always confuses me. But when you have to double click to confirm like with apple pay or to install and app. Where are you suppose to look? Directly ahead? At the notch? Does it matter? Sometimes it messes up and I have to do it again which is why I am asking. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

At the notch.

That’s weird. I literally have never had an issue. Not on my x, not on my Xs max, or my 11” pro.

I have had an iPhone XR for 3 weeks (returned it within the holiday return period). During the 3 weeks usage, FaceID will fail half of the time. I will have look straight to the phone. If the phone is little bit lower or higher in an angel, FaceID will fail to detect. If I have no glasses, FaceID will fail sometimes. When I am laying down on my bed, FaceID will fail 100% of the time. I returned and went straight back to my Huawei P20.

If that worked, I wouldn't have made this post. LOL
I just never knew where to look. I have caused it to mess up not looking at the right place.
Shouldn't really be like that as it should be as simple as just looking at the phone in general as you would when you are using it. Perhaps holding too close (or too far), or something else along those lines?

This doesn’t sound right. You don’t need to specifically look at anything other than the screen for this to work. Provided the phone is at a reasonable distance from your face.

Ah! @C DM nailed it. Didn’t see your response before posting buddy.

I think you should setup faceid again as it should be much more reliable than this. Mine pretty much never fails unless it’s too close. I’m amazed how well it works
