downgrade baseband?

hi,

I updated my iPhone 3G yesterday to version 3.1 via iTunes and then jailbreaked successfully with Pwnage Tool, then tried to unlock with ultrasn0w with no luck. After searching a bit i found out you cannot unlock 3.1 if the baseband is updated. my question is: is there any chance i can downgrade the baseband? will it work if i do a restore from a 3.0.1 ipsw file? or do i just have to wait until unlocking 3.1 will be possible by ultrasn0w (if ever)

any suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT: before updating to version 3.1 with iTunes i had version 2.2 which was unlocked when i bought my iphone

No, you cannot downgrade your baseband. You are stuck with no unlock, until the Dev Team figures out an unlock for the updated one. My guess is they aren't really working on an unlock right now with all of the work they have been doing fot the 3GS and IPT3 jailbreaks. They warn you about updating for a reason...

searching a bit more i found out this video, the guy says you can downgrade the baseband if you have boot loader version 05.08. i don't have the phone with me right now, i'm gonna check for my boot loader version tomorrow. btw is the boot loader upgradeable/downgradable ?

sorry man but i don't understand what you mean by that. this was my first jailbreak and unlocking attempt, now i know i should have been researching more before updating to 3.1, but can't do anything about that now.

i forgot to say in the first post that before updating to 3.1 via iTunes i had version 2.2 unlocked.

That wasn't directed at you. Girl in my office had one of those piggyback SIMs that tricked her 3G into working on another carrier. I don't know if they still work on 3.1.

You cannot change bootloader. If you find you have Bootloader 5.08, let Fuzzyband do it's thing.

Only about 10% of 3G phones have BL 5.08

guess what !!! my iphone is in that 10% group. i installed Fuzzyband, bootloader was 05.08, downgraded the baseband and now the phone is unlocked.

Boy are you lucky.

Lesson learned ..... (I hope) If you plan to use JB and UL, never update your iPhone to official Apple firmware until you check with DevTeam blog.

one last question: let's suppose a new firmware version comes out and i decide to update. can i use a file downloaded from this known site: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and then JB it with PT or redsn0w? i mean will it update the baseband?

anyway, in this case i can alternatively download torrents with already jailbroken firmware.

I don't know anything about that site.

I recommend to get your info and referrals from DevTeam blog, they will not mislead you and if you really learned the lesson, you would not even be asking me this question.

maybe that was not a smart question, but it was just a question. i would never again do something without being guaranteed it is safe . i want to thank you for your advices. i said 'known site' because many sites and blogs that explain how to do iphone unlocks and JBs refer to it.

There are a couple of "trusted" sites, if you follow the DevTeam blog, you will see those mentioned often.
