If the DVD is the one that came with the computer then you should be good to go.

It should work.

EDIT: I just re-read your post and missed the "did not" part, my mistake. Revise my answer to, not sure if it will work.

There never has been an included DVD since Lion I believe. You need to take an 8GB or bigger thumb drive and create a High Sierra installer. I would use the High Sierra patcher, because that's the easiest way to do it if you're not comfortable with the Terminal. It's also the easiest way to get the High Sierra installer image now, as it downloads it for you directly if you want.

The difference with you is that you have a supported machine, so there will be no post-install to do like an unsupported machine.

Do a fresh time machine backup, and keep that drive connected, then install high sierra on the internal, and during the setup choose the restore from a time machine backup. It will install all your account, apps and preferences into high sierra.

Thank you for your help, however the DVD I have is bootable, I bought a while back and have used it but not to downgrade from Catalina. You don't think if I erase the HD I can use this DVD?

Yes, for sure you can use it, but just be sure you have a current time machine backup before you wipe the internal drive. And you're not downgrading... you're wiping Catalina, and you will need to format the drive to do that properly, and then installing high sierra.

Then after the install of HS, you can restore your data with your time machine backup.

Can you restore a .15 back up to a .13 install? I don't think so.
Yes, because it's not restoring the OS. Only the account and app data. Any incompatible apps will be taken care of during the OS setup after install. I've done it myself, and you're spreading misinformation.

Ok here is what happened, I started the computer held down the option key until I seen the boot option, I selected the High Sierra dvd and it started loading. the task bar looked completely loaded, in face I left it for almost 2 hours and it just sat there, wouldn't do anything so I put the computer down and started up in Catalina. How can I downgrade from Catalina to Sierra or high Sierra? I ordered a bootable USB drive with Sierra on it however the dvd was supposed to be bootable and that didn't work. Does anyone know how to downgrade? any help would be appreciated.

Download .13, make a usb drive, hold down option while booting, boot from usb, install .13.

If you manage to boot from your USB, wipe your drive and run the installer, you may get an error that the installer is corrupt. It isnt. You need to set the Mac time back to the year High Sierra came out ( or thereabouts ). So disconnect from the internet and open Terminal and follow these instructions:

  • Type date into Terminal followed by the date you want in this format [month][day][hour][minute][year] eg date 0711141516 then press enter.
Quit Terminal, try again and installer should run.

timidpimpin is corrrect but DVD's ended with Snow Leopard and Lion (If I remember correctly) was the first OS to come with a USB (at additional cost).

If you bought a DVD it is suggest instead to create a USB install drive instead to play it safe. Look on the internet or even Apple's support site for instructions to do this.
