I don't understand what blobs are and their purpose.

I jailbroke my iPhone 5 a whole ago when ios6 jb first came out.

Would cydia have saved a copy? How would I be able to tell?

Thanks!

Auto saved cydia blobs for iOS 7 are not valid. However, manually saved blobs are valid. Open cydia and click TSS center, that will tell you what valid shsh blobs cydia has for your device.

Thanks.

How do I open cydia if it is not installed (not jailbroken) ? I tried their website but looks like that info is only in the app.

?

Your first post says jailbroken and now you say not jailbroken?

Try reading up on jailbreaking.

If Cydia is not installed your not jailbroken (unless your removed it…)

If not jailbroken and you did not save SHSH's manually, you won't have them and can't get them anymore except for 6.1.4 which is now the only signed firmware on the IP5

I posted that I jailbroke a while ago, when jb first came out for iPhone 5. Not currently jailbroken.

I never manually saves shsh but maybe 6.1.4 was saved automatically.

How do I find that out without cydia installed? Do I have to do a tethered jailbreak?

What iOS are you on? If it's 6.1.3 or above, you can't do any sort of jailbreak, tethered or untethered. You are stuck without the ability to jailbreak at all until after iOS 7.

As darricksailo stated, saved SHSH for iPhone 5 cannot currently be used for firmware restores.

If you never manually saved shsh blobs, then the ones cydia has for you (6.0-6.1.2) are invalid

At the moment, tinyumbrella isn't updated to validate the shsh blobs. Only iFaith can properly check if the shsh is valid or not as of right now

Use tinyumbrella to get your 6.1.4 blobs (point it to apple's server). But honestly, those 6.1.4 will be useless for an iPhone 5 should there be a downgrade exploit unless a bootrom exploit is discovered

Even if you saved them you cannot use them to downgrade an iphone 5 to older firmware versions.
If you're on 6.1.3 or 6.1.4 there's nothing you can do to JB it.
