Downgrading from 10 to 9.3.5 - how long will 9.3.5 last?

Hello everyone.

I know there are other things in life much more important than music but I am so utterly upset by the new music app. It's absolutely horrendous and have decided to downgrade to 9.

However, will Apple release security updates for 9 for the foreseeable future and how long does it normally take before an iOS is not compatible with that many apps. (I know the last question is app specific and dependable.)

As someone who also hates the new music app (and a few other things in iOS 10), don't downgrade. You'll become trapped on a version that is no longer fully supported either by Apple or app developers, and you'll be living in fear of the day when you eventually do have to upgrade anyway.

You've already bitten the bullet and upgraded, there's no point living in the past, just hang on and wait for the inevitable improvements in the point fixes to come.

Re the music app - there are so many simply stupid changes they have made. For instance, why are not the song durations shown anymore? I mean it's completely insane. Now there's a big fat "+" sign to add it to my library. Well, if I need to add it to my library I would have done so already!! Also, previously I could search for an artist in my library and get a nice list of all the albums/singles etc in CHRONOLOGICAL order. Now they're all over the place.

And finally, when did album artwork started to look like coasters...

Am so fed up with this.

I went back from the GM and liked having various things back that iOS 9 has, but then went for iOS 10 once again when it was released yesterday since I figured sooner or later I'll likely upgrade anyway to get the latest, might as well start using it now.

Apple does not release security (or any) updates for previous versions of iOS unless it's the last version of iOS for the respective device, and even then, it's rare. The last time they did this was for iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th gen in Feb 2014.

@OP: I HIGHLY recommend you check out Cesium in the app store. I have not used the music app in a long time after switching to Cesium.

Cesium is great because it's not trying to cram the Apple subscription service down your throat everytime you open the app.

You can stay on iOS 9.3.5 as long as you like, but you will no longer receive security updates. If a 9.3.6 happens to be released, it will be only for those devices that cannot upgrade to iOS 10. Those particular bug fixes will be included in a later version of iOS 10.

I changed back to iOS 9 in an early beta and lost ALL iMessage history.
So what do you think?

I went back after a couple of days of the beta. iOS 9 is end of life; it is finished. Apple fixed several vulnerabilities in the iOS 10.0 release alone, not to mention that iOS 10 itself has security enhancements. I agree with Dented that staying with an older release will just delay the problem and you will become paranoid and annoyed with every subsequent iOS 10 release, which your device will download and attempt to install. You will be loathing the update for a long time. It’s just not worth it.

Please, check out apps like Cesium, Ecoute or Marvis. Cesium is a lot like the iOS 9 music app and it integrates with your iTunes music library (and iCloud Music Library). If you’re using Apple Music, then consider something else, because the catalogue pages are only available in the iOS music app. We don’t have to accept many of Apple’s default apps anymore.

Marvis supports Apple Music just fine. But yeah, for categories only stock music app supports it.

You must have a backup of your iOS 9 install. I don't have, and after downgrade, I lost all my message histories.

Basically the entire ‘For You’, ‘New’ and ‘Browse’ taps are unavailable in other apps, until you added songs to your library or saved playlists. If you’re using Apple Music, then you will probably not like the third-party apps for that reason. If you don’t like the music app, then I don’t see a compelling reason for using Apple Music anyway. It isn’t any good with music suggestions, Spotify and Deezer are much, much better. I was shocked when I saw how badly the two new ‘My Favourites/New Music Mix’ playlists are. They are so cringeworthily bad that I consider unsubscribing for that reason alone.

Nope. Changing the text size seems to do very little, even the smallest size won’t change much. It is clear from this alone that Apple didn’t care about platform integration and their own interface guidelines.

Using dynamic font you can sort of decrease font size but it may affect anywhere else over the iOS. You have no way to decrease icon size unless you are jailbroken.

Apple has a pretty awesome "Genius" feature which uses music itself rather than metadata to mix all of those stuff together. Now they just abandon it for no reason.
I rarely use it though as I believe my own mix is the best mix. Perhaps Apple has the same thought so they ditch Genius completely.

I am dragging my feet on the upgrade. I will probably do it soon and just run Cesium on my iPhone. I still haven't found anything I really like on my iPad. Smart Player by Shad Deen is the best I've found, but it has been abandoned for about 2 years and his new app, Loud, is only available for iPhone. I'm debating upgrading my phone (6 plus) tonight. As others have said, it's going to happen. The longer you resist the change, the harder it will be. Apple is not going to go back at this point. The main thing I miss in all the third part apps is the "Recently Added" tab. I have started to shift my smart playlists in iTunes and now I drag them to a regular playlist and play from that. Every evening, I delete the top bunch that got played that day, reshuffle the smart list, and then drag it back into my regular list and hit skip repeats. It's been working pretty well.

I started doing that after I went to iOS 10 Beta on my iPad for a week. I rolled my iPad back a couple days ago while I still could. I think I might hold out on my iPad for a few more days. I'm not really sure... This is all very frustrating to me as music is greater than 75% of my use of iOS devices...
