Downgrading from 12.9 to 10.5 now or wait for next gen?

I’m honestly done with my iPad Pro 12.9

Originally, I was so excited and in looooove with the screen when I got it. But month after month, I’ve noticed that I’ve slowly been reverting back to my original and very slow iPad Air 9.7. It defeats the purpose of me using the larger screen and I think for someone like me who watching mostly YouTube, browse the web and enjoys drawing and annotating the 10.5 might be better for me. It’s never going to feel like a secondary computer, no matter how much I tried to force it on myself. I’m quite dissapojting because I really was looking forward of going computer-less. Bravo to Apple for luring me in with their advertisements. The honeymoon face is defiantly over, and now I’m looking forward to divorcing it.

I’ve read rumors of the next gen being announced in March, is that even possible? I don’t even think I can hold out a month or to... or til July. I also want to make a buck of the current gen iPad Pro while it still has value. Am I rushing into it, or should I go for it? Keep in mind, that I most likely will be getting next 10.5 if they expand the screen to fill out where the touch button used to be.

If you can, i would wait. Cause if rumors are true that Apple is going to shrink the bezels all the way around...then the 10.5" will become something like an 11.9"(?) screen. So you'll get the best of both worlds. The size of the current 10.5" but with a larger screen. Of course i don't know for sure this is what Apple is going to do, i think it's worth the wait...if you can.

I’m the complete opposite. Picked up the 12.9 along with the pencil strictly for drawing purposes and multiscreen capability; also having the larger 512gb storage for videos is great.

My very first and only ipad was the 4th gen retina back in 2012. It’s been about 6-7 years. It’s essentially the same size (so to speak) as the 9.7 and 10.5. I was going to baby the 12.9 and keep the retina 4 handy for the usual web browsing, media consumption, etc. It took me about 1 week to get completely acclimated with the larger screen and now my 4th gen smaller ipad has been relegated to being a door stopper, and sometimes a table coaster.

Anything smaller than the 12.9 (basically the size of a legal bound notepad, binder paper, etc) is simply much too small. My 4th gen is likely going to be donated to my nephew. There is absolutely no way I can go back to anything smaller than the 12.9. If the above rumors are true, an 11.9 will still be much too small.

Would much rather have a 1 to 2 tb storage. I’m probably going to be sticking with my 12.9 for the next 7 years unless they release one with over 1 tb capacity.

It's a shame that people with the opposite viewpoints couldn't get together and do a swap. I realise it's not practical (different locations, different costs and condition of the actual iPads), but wouldn't it be great if a 10.5 and a 12.9 owner could swap for a few weeks and find out if the grass really was greener etc, or until the next generation was announced?

One additional point that I would like to add is before you seriously consider jumping off the 12.9 wagon.

Seriously give multitasking split screen a thorough test run. Everything you've listed from watching youtube, browsing the web, and drawing is exactly what I do. (As far as drawing is concerned, I'm trying to get back into drawing and learning to draw realistic faces; my first ever attempt below). I also watch sitcoms that I've loaded onto the ipad, and often times I would run picture in picture mode with them playing in the corner of the screen while I draw or surf. The extra screen real estate allows me to "function" effectively.

Even if you don't believe multitasking splitscreen is worthy at the moment. It will likely come in handy.

If you're an artist that likes to use reference images, the 12.9's larger real estate is an absolute welcome addition. The ability to split the screen either in halves or thirds AND rest your palm on the larger 12.9 flat surface simply makes drawing easier. It just feels more natural with the larger screen.

The second image below uses the ios app Pipifier to run any video from any website in picture in picture mode. I can let the video play in the corner. I can resize the video smaller or larger and still surf or do other things.

Oh yea, gaming.... mobile gaming. If you are even remotely interested in mobile gaming (could be anything from Tetris, Bejeweled, Solataire, Pinball, etc.), the larger screen size will/should offer a better experience ... in my opinion.

But after you've given multitasking splitscreen as serious go around, then if you still believe you want to downgrade, then do so. Just make sure you have no regrets.

If you want to retain the home button, upgrade to the 10.5. If you want the X redesign and new gestures, I would hold off.

I agree. There are people who are STILL waiting for 3D touch to appear on iPads. Better to wait for something you really want than to buy now and regret that decision.

I don't think we will see new iPads Pros in March, and it's highly unlikely that the 10,5 design would change this year, or even next year. They just released the 10,5 design, why would they redesign it this soon. Not gonna happen.

Expect new iPads (pro) this fall. But maybe Apple will upgrade the Mini or the entry level iPad during the spring, that wouldn't come as a surprise.

I just upgraded from the 10,5 to the 12,9 inch. I enjoy multitasking better on the larger screen. None of them are particularly mobile in my opinion. Both of them are quite heavy and bulky, unlike the Mini.

So, I’ve decided to downgrade. I had an old Air that I’ve sold, therefor I’m technically only paying a little over half price for the 10.5 (picking it up today)

I’m gonna sell my 12.9, so I can earn back (mostly) what I lost. I’ll defiently gonna miss having safari or YouTube open while drawing, but at the same time I know I’m gonna enjoy drawing and annotating PDFs more because it’s gonna feel very comfortable holding in my hand, especially in bed, ah! And my eyes won’t suffer any longer.

I’m defiently gonna buy the next gen iPad Pro 10.5 if the screen gets longer to fill out the bezels where Touch ID used to be. But that won’t be anytime soon. To me it’s important to be happy in my current situation, and there’s no reason for me to b*tch and moan for another 6 months.
